As he has many times in the past, Matt Millen again made an ass of himself on NFL Draft day. No he didn’t select another wide receiver in the top of the first round. This time he drew attention after calling a Polish co-analyst a ‘Polack’ live on-air.

The jab at Ron Jaworski was all in fun, we can be sure of that, but the lack of common sense Millen continues to show on draft day is another story.

Millen, the former CEO, or whatever fancy title he and the Lions office gave him at the time, was jawing it up with Jaworski on the air and somehow got into a conversation about fried bologna sandwiches.

Millen then blurted out:

“Ask any Polack from Buffalo how they like them, right Jaws.”

Jaworski who was known as the “Polish Rifle” during his playing days with the Philadelphia Eagles didn’t seem to take offense but the question here is, were these analysts getting as far away from NFL Draft talk as possible to divert the audience’s attention away from Millen’s past draft history?

We can’t blame them if they were. You can almost feel the football fans in Detroit cringing every time Millen talks football especially on draft day and after his latest gaffe, he may have further isolated himself from the great Polish community of Hamtramck, Michigan.

A lot of people outside of Detroit say Matt Millen is a decent NFL commentator even after the train wreck that occurred with him as the engineer but when it comes to the NFL draft, come on networks, let that settle in for a second and think about who you are putting in front of the public to present an “expert” opinion.  

Bottom line is, seeing Millen with a mic in hand working as a draft analyst was more awkward than the asinine comment he made. It’s as absurd as Tiger Woods giving a course on fidelity.

Oregon Ducks running back LeGarrette Blount may be the sleeper of this year’s draft, literally.

While still waiting for his name to be called during the final rounds of the NFL 2010 Draft, Blount was caught by ESPN cameras taking a nap.

Last season, Blount instantly became a member of the Hall of Shame when he sucker-punched an opposing Boise State Broncos player after being taunted after his team’s loss.

Before cold-cocking that player, Blount was projected by many draft analysts to go in the 3rd round.

Unfortunately, Blount never heard his name before the gavel hit and the draft was over.

But this story doesn’t end here.

Shortly after the draft, along comes San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary galloping in on a horse in shining armor, signing the undrafted player. This could prove to be a great move by the 49ers. Blount is a strong runner with talent and strong competitive nature with the ability to run over a few NFL linebackers if given the chance.

Though crucified by the public and many sports sites, including us after that incident, Blount deserves a chance to find a permanent spot on an NFL roster and is our hands-down pick for ‘sleeper’ of the draft.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was slapped with a 6-game suspension today by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for dissin’ the league’s personal conduct policy.

Goodell also is requiring the star slinger to attend as the boss put it, “comprehensive behavioral evaluation by medical professionals.”

Like Michael Vick’s suspension after he came back into the league after serving jail time for dog-fighting charges, Roethslisberger’s penalty can be reduced to a lesser amount (4) games for good behavior.

Roethlisberger, who’s meat has dominated the news, is also banned from participating in any team off season drills or activities until he completes this evaluation.

Here’s what the boss had to say regarding the suspension:

“The Personal Conduct Policy makes clear that I may impose discipline ‘even where the conduct does not result in conviction of a crime’ as, for example, where the conduct ‘imposes inherent danger to the safety and well being of another person’,”

“As the District Attorney concluded, the extensive investigatory record shows that you contributed to the irresponsible consumption of alcohol by purchasing alcoholic beverages for underage college students, at least some of whom were likely already intoxicated. There is no question that the excessive consumption of alcohol that evening put the students and yourself at risk.”

“The Personal Conduct Policy also states that discipline is appropriate for conduct that ‘undermines or puts at risk the integrity and reputation of the NFL, NFL clubs, or NFL players.’ By any measure, your conduct satisfies that standard.”

Jason La Canfora of NFL.com reported that the Steelers have kicked up efforts to trade Big Ben.

Big Ben should draw some attention in the trade market, especially with two Super Bowl wins under his belt. You would have to assume he will straighten out knowing, like Vick, it’s shape up or ship out time.

According to La Canfora, the Steelers “had a brief conversation with the St. Louis Rams over the weekend, according to a league source, but the Rams weren’t interested in taking on Roethlisberger. The Steelers wanted to send Roethlisberger to the Rams as part of a package to move up to No. 1 overall in this week’s draft and select Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford.”

Other teams possibly showing interest are the Buffalo Bills and Oakland Raiders.

High-profile NFL agent Gary Wichard who represents Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen and running back C.J.Spiller is facing pretty strong accusations that go along with a lawsuit filed by ex-NFL player Brian Bosworth.

Boz said he is out more than $2 million and is blaming Wichard.

Bosworth also said the agent had assured him that his investments were protected but it turns out, the financial advisor may have had a history of bad financial deals with another NFL player.

According to sources, the suit alleges that Wichard had direct knowledge that the business manager in question “had engaged in fraudulent activity.”

Bosworth’s lawsuit is asking for punitive damages, general damages and economic damages.

PITTSBURGH – Ben Roethlisberger’s meat remains in the news.

Ty Ballou, the owner of PLB Sports, told the New York Times he is severing ties with Roethlisberger and will no longer distribute Big Ben’s Beef Jerky. Lately it appears Ben needs little help in doling out any goods related to meat.

Ballou is said to be an avid Steelers fan and also told the newspaper he is disgusted by the allegations made against Roethlisberger in a Georgia sexual assault case.

Although the Georgia D.A. refused to press charges on the Steelers quarterback and the player did read an apology in front of the cameras, Ballou decided to terminate the contract:

“I can’t imagine anyone touching Ben Roethlisberger. Enough is enough. I hope there is a suspension,” said Ballou. “At some point in time, Ben has got to put himself in the right position and understand what it means to be a celebrity, a quarterback, a Steelers player.”

Ballou’s website lists many other athletes as endorsers for his products like Joe Greene, Kurt Warner, Nolan Ryan and Terrell Owens but the details surrounding Big Ben’s personal meat at the Capital City Bar in Georgia was the last straw and too much for him to handle.

“We’ve made a lot of money together. I’m leaving a lot on the table by terminating this contract. Even thought there were no criminal charges, there are just enough issues here that it’s the best interests of PLB Sports to break ties.”

PITTSBURGH – Like a chapter out of the book of Tiger Woods apologies and premeditated, rehearsed statements, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger read his apology after the D.A. in Georgia announced he would bring no charges of sexual assault against the player.

Although appearance doesn’t mean everything, Ben could have at least shaved and dressed it up a little bit for the occasion. He may want to consider doing that later today when NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell meets with him to discuss this and other recent incidents that may lead to a suspension.

“I’d like to begin by expressing gratitude to the thorough investigation process in Georgia. The prosecutor’s decision not to bring charges, I know without a doubt, is the right conclusion. I don’t intend to discuss any details related to the events of Georgia. I’m happy to put this behind me and move forward.”

“I’m truly sorry for the disappointment and negative attention I brought to my family, my teammates, coaches, the Rooneys and the NFL.”

“I understand that the opportunities I have been blessed with are a privilege, and much is expected of me as the quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I absolutely want to be the leader this team deserves, valued in the community and a role model to kids. I have much work to do to earn this trust. And I’m committed to improving and showing everyone my true values.”

“I am excited to get back to work with my teammates, and I’m more determined than ever to have a great season. I intend to make my family, friends and Steeler nation proud on all fronts. Thank you. God bless.”

Oh and BTW, while this was going on another accusation arose from an attorney during an interview.

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – District Attorney Fred Bright announced that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will not be charged of sexual assault in the case involving a college student at a nightclub last month saying the 20-year-old’s accusations could not be proven.

The accuser, a Georgia College & State University student, told police that the Steelers star sexually assaulted her at the Capital City night club on March 5th. Bright said the investigation revealed the woman was boozing it up heavily and what happened in the bathroom between the pair is unclear.

Medical personnel who examined her after the incident could not confirm she had been raped and there was not enough DNA to confirm who it belonged to.

“We are not condoning Mr. Roethlisberger’s actions that night,” Bright said. “But we do not prosecute morals. We prosecute crimes.”

The investigation lasted for weeks over which time the accuser urged prosecutors not to move forward any charges.

“I know when I have a case and I know when I don’t. I do not have enough evidence to convince 12 jurors beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr. Roethlisberger was guilty of rape,” said Bright.

“If this is sexual assault, it has to be proven that it happened without consent, and that’s difficult especially if both parties consumed alcohol,” added J. Tom Morgan, a former D.A.

Roethlisberger, who owns a home in Georgia, has not participated in recent offseason workouts with the Steelers.

With this ordeal over, Roethlisberger, currently playing under a $102 million contract, is expected to have a sit-down with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in the near future to discuss his many off-the-field issues.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The New York Jets continue to add NFL players with questionable character.

Receiver Santonio Holmes was dumped by the Pittsburgh Steelers for the Jets 5th round draft pick but the player will not be on the field until Week 5 of the upcoming NFL season.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Holmes will be suspended for the first four games of the 2010 season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

Although Holmes has 235 career catches for 3,835 yards and 20 touchdowns, he brings a decent amount of baggage with him. In 2008, he was busted for possession of marijuana and prior to that was involved in a domestic violence incident in 2006.

Jets owner Woody Johnson seems headed down the same path that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones took a few years ago when he gambled on Tank Williams and Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones, two other players with records.

That road hit a dead end for Dallas but time will tell if the same happens to the Jets.

In addition to Holmes, the Jets added disgruntled Cleveland Browns receiver Braylon Edwards last year, just two days after he was accused of punching someone at a downtown Cleveland nightclub and also obtained Antonio Cromartie last month from San Diego.

Cromartie has fathered seven children by six women in five states and is facing legal issues regarding some of those.

If that isn’t enough baggage to add to a locker room, the Jets also had an interest in former Giants receiver Plaxico Burress, who is currently behind bars for carrying a concealed weapon and shooting himself in the leg outside a New York nightclub during November 2008 and last month were said to be trying to obtain Brandon Marshall from the Denver Broncos, another player who appears to need an attitude adjustment.
