NFL Returning Pro Bowl Game to Hawaii

The NFL announced that the 2011 Pro Bowl will return to Hawaii and be played the weekend before Super Bowl XLV NFL Logoat Aloha Stadium. Game time is Sunday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. ET.

Honolulu had been the home to the Pro-Bowl from 1980 through 2009 until a change was made and for the first time the game was played prior to the Super Bowl in 2010.

The decision to play the weekend before the Super Bowl again in 2011 was fueled by the increase in ratings and attendance for the 2010 game that was held in South Beach in January.

Although that 2010 Pro Bowl game was missing the players from both Super Bowl teams and the game had a slew of reserves, approximately 12.3 million viewers watched the game on ESPN. That number was a 40% increase from the 2009 game that was played the week after that Super Bowl.

The 12.3 million viewers also set a record for most
viewers to watch an All-Star game in any sport on cable television.

NFL Vice president Frank Supovitz commented on the change.

“Playing the Pro Bowl before the Super Bowl generated more excitement and interest in the event and also kicked off Super Bowl week in an innovative new way. We are pleased to return to the state of Hawaii, which has embraced the Pro Bowl for 30 years.”

Miami Heat player Carlos Arroyo mugshot and arrest

MIAMI, Fla. – Miami Heat guard Carlos Arroyo was arrested on February 26, 2010 after police complained he did not carlos arroyo mugshotcomply with their requests after pulling him over on his way to practice,

According to The Miami Herald newspaper, Arroyo was arrested in Coral Gables and faces charges for a traffic violation and resisting arrest without violence.

According to police, Arroyo was driving slowly and impeding traffic then did not pull over as a motorcycle cop made several attempts for him to do so.

The police documents stated a few extra units were called and after the NBA player pulled over, he “attempted to resist” being cuffed.

Arroyo was also accused of being confrontational and by the looks of his mugshot (pictured here) that reveals a bunch of nicks and scratches on Carlos’ face and neck, it may have been the cops who were a little overzealous.

After going down to the precinct to cheese for a mugshot, Arroyo was allowed to leave after he promised to appear in court.

Heat president Pat Riley released a comment saying he had no comment: “We are aware of the traffic stop involving Carlos Arroyo this morning . . . and we will have no comment at this time.”

Carlos also made a statement:

“I was in my car on the way to practice this morning when I was stopped by the police. This incident led to me being arrested for the very first time in my life”

“I sincerely apologize to my fans, family, the Miami Heat and the entire South Florida community for the negative publicity that has arisen from this morning’s events. I am confident that once all of the facts come out in a court of law, this matter will be resolved in my favor.”

Now we’re not legal experts here at Sports Climax but we did stay at a Holiday Inn once and this whole ordeal looks and sounds a little out of whack.

A Hispanic male driving down the road too slow.

The Hispanic gets pulled over.

A bunch of cops are summoned and rush to the scene.

The Hispanic dude gets cuffed, dragged down to precinct and the mugshot portrays a few subtle Rodney King-like similarities.

Bitch-Slap-of-the-Week – ESPN’s Tony Kornheiser

SLAP! ESPN host and analyst, Tony Kornheiser gets the Sports Climax Bitch-Slap-of-the-Week after he was suspended Tony Kornheiser Hannah Stormby the network for two weeks after trashing fellow ESPN commentator Hannah Storm about her short, tight sexy outfits.

Pardon the Interruption Tony but what are you trying to do, ruin a beautiful thing!

The attractive Storm has been a celebrity of sorts on web blogs all over the country as a following of admirers have accumulated over the years, many times posting her sexy pics on their sites.

While most males would be complimentary of Hannah’s outfit in question, Kornheiser trashed it calling it a “horrifying outfit” and went on to slam her high heeled “red go-go boots” and skirt that was “way too short for somebody her age.”

SLAP!! There’s another backhander, Tony, haven’t you heard the cliche, “If you still have it flaunt it.”Sexy Hannah Storm outfit ESPN

Kornheiser’s comments were made on the air on Friday on ESPN’s Washington, D.C., affiliate and here’s the text to that rant.

“Hannah Storm in a horrifying, horrifying outfit today. She’s got on red go-go boots and a catholic school plaid skirt, way too short for somebody in her 40s or maybe early 50s by now. She’s got on her typically very, very tight shirt. She looks like she has sausage casing wrapping around her upper body. I know she’s very good, and I’m not supposed to be critical of ESPN people, so I won’t but Hannah Storm, come on now! Stop! What are you doing? She’s what I would call a Holden Caulfield fantasy at this point.”

ESPN VP John Skipper said the remarks were “entirely inappropriate. Hurtful and personal comments such as these are not acceptable and have significant consequences.”

And those consequences are a two week suspension and a possible change to Storm’s attire.

Kornheiser was said to have called Storm to directly apologize and also apologized numerous times on the air.

If Hannah drops the hem on her skirt, he should personally call every one of her male fans to apologize as well.

NRA Instructor Shoots Student

ORLANDO, Fla. – Yesterday an incident occurred at a church in Orlando where a student was shot while attending a Glockgun instruction course and there’s two kickers here.

First the course was being taught by an NRA instructor, a title which by the looks of this incident can’t mean too much, and second it was being held at a church.

According to police Robert Frauman Jr. was shot when instructor Michael Phillips’ firearm discharged, sending the bullet through a table and into Frauman’s foot.

After the past events surrounding NBA Washington Wizards player Gilbert Arenas and a teammate having guns in their locker room and NFL player Plaxico Burress shooting himself in the leg while out clubbing in New York, this most recent event is another example that gives prosecutors justification to file aggressive charges against people mishandling weapons.

While Burress is currently serving time for his crime and Arenas awaits his fate, this most recent bonehead incident makes us wonder how many careless people are carrying concealed weapons around our streets.

Currently in prison garb, Burress is paying a hefty price for taking a loaded gun out in public and Arenas is also expected to spend time behind bars. Phillips directed a loaded gun at a student and allowed it to fire, how much time should he get?

Regardless of the obvious wrong-doing surrounding this incident, with the NRA’s strong-armed political clout especially in the Dab Nab South in places like Georgia and Florida, some expect Phillips to walk away with a simple slap on the wrist, maybe with probation or community service hours, some bullshit like that.

This story also brings another question to mind.

Shouldn’t that be an oxymoron, a “gun” class at a church?

And while we’re on the topic of boneheaded gun instructors, another shooting occurred in the past when another gun instructor shot himself in the thigh while teaching a gun course.

See that video below then ask yourself, do you really want any citizens regardless of title or affiliation having the right to carry a weapon on the streets.

The Nads’ ‘Scrotie’ is king of the mascots

The Rhode Island School of Design may own the most bizarre name and mascot in sports after edging out the ‘Farts’ and ‘Whoopee’. The team is “The Nads” and the mascot is Scrotie:

In 2001, the unofficial mascot evolved for The Nads and skated around the ice in what looked more like a late-night, prize-winning Halloween costume than mascot attire. The video above shows Scrotie chasing an opposing mascot “Clammy” at one of the college’s hockey games.

RISD has proudly promoted their two men’s teams on its website writing, “RISD’s sports teams include basketball “The Balls” and ice hockey “The Nads”.

After the Nads hockey team was put in place, the basketball team was then formed under the name ‘Balls’ to stay consistent with the ice hockey team.go-nads-mascot

Each team developed its own slogan, the basketball team’s being, “When the heat is on, the Balls stick together”, and the hockey squad sticking with a more simple “Go Nads” that is found on their fan’s attire.

Scrotie is pictured on the right on the ice in his wiener costume and red cape.

He has since been given the shaft but will best be remembered for having the balls to screw with the opposition.

Bitch-Slap-of-the-Week – The Pitiful New Jersey Nets

When is the last time we saw a team in the NBA nearly mathematically eliminated from the playoffs at All-Star break?IZOD Center With an embarrassing 4-48 record, the dreadful New Jersey Nets are almost there.

With 32 games left on their schedule and sitting about 22 games behind the No. 8 seed Miami Heat, the players should be considering dusting off their golf clubs and getting ready for summer.

Nothing like having a record-setting season including owning the worst start in NBA history. The Nets started out 0-16 then fired their head coach Lawrence Frank. That didn’t seem to help much as the team lost their next two games to set a record for the worst start in NBA history, 0-18.

Since then the team has continued to struggle to hit the net and have gone 4-31. Yeah I know, that’s about as bad as it can get . . . or is it?

Last night after a storm dumped more than a foot of snow on the Jersey area, only 1,016 fans were able to make it to the IZOD Center to watch their team hit just 39.2% of their shots from the field and drop another one into the loss column.

With just a few rows of seats occupied, the arena had the aura of a high school game being played in an NBA arena and the lack of performance by the Nets didn’t help the scenario much either.

Normally the Bitch-Slaps in this column contain a few backhanders and can be heard in the other room but not wanting to haul off and backhand a franchise when their asses are dragging this far down in the dirt, we’ll deliver a single open-handed SLAP!

And on a final note, hats off to those faithful fans for showing their support to the NBA’s most dreadful show on court.

Teflon Don is the Matt Millen of the NHL

Revised on February 10, 2010.

Now that Ilya Kovalchuk is donning a New Jersey Devil sweater and ‘goaltender of the future’ Kari Lehtonen has traded in his Thrashers blue for a Dallas star, it may be time to switch our (AP Photo/John Bazemore)speculation from ‘what team will win the Kovalchuk sweepstakes’ to ‘what city will the Thrashers be moving to’.

Don Waddell who was an assistant GM of the Detroit Red Wings and won a Stanley Cup with the team in 1998, has all but bombed since taking the helm for the Atlanta Thrashers and his journey has ‘Matt Millen’ written all over it.

Not to be outdone by Millen, in the same week he dumped Kovalchuk, he also traded another first-round pick Lehtonen. Add those two players to the other stars like Dany Heatley and Marian Hossa who have also left the building.

Know as Teflon Don for his ability to survive ‘sticky situations’ and somehow hang onto his job as his team remains near the cellar of his league for much of his 10 years as GM, he has set up the Atlanta Thrashers for failure by allowing his star players (again) to leave the building.

Many expect these latest moves to bury the franchise. With an arena that on many nights is blanketed with empty seats, this move may prove to be the team’s demise. In a recent column, Hockey News columnist Ryan Kennedy opines, “The future is bleak.”

Former GM and Hockey Night in Canada analyst Mike Milbury was highly critical of the Thrashers’ GM, and doesn’t believe Waddell got fair value in return for his star. “I think he misplayed his hand, and I think he badly misplayed his hand,” Milbury said. He went on to say that Waddell has a history of making bad trades.

In a more recent published piece in The Hockey News Rory Boylen explains, “In trading away Kari Lehtonen to the Dallas Stars Tuesday night, the Thrashers have now disconnected themselves from all but one of their six first round draft picks from the first five drafts of the team’s existence.”

That should sound familiar to Detroit Lions fans as they witnessed a similar situation under Matt Millen. Of the first round draft picks for the Lions between 2002-2006, only one player remains on the team and like the Thrashers many of those were high first-rounders.

Waddell jumped into a sort of ‘save face’ mode with a press release last week explaining in detail to the fans and media the millions that were offered and turned down by Kovy and his agent Jay Grossman but that dog and pony show may not go far with the fans here in Atlanta. The bottom line is Teflon Don let the face of his franchise go and could not convince the player to sign on the dotted line.

It has to be embarrassing to the franchise when a player refuses to accept $100 million to play NHL hockey in Atlanta. Shunning an offer of this magnitude speaks volumes and may represent what lack of faith Kovy may have in Waddell’s ability to build a winner.

Normally in sports negotiations, real estate transactions and corporate buyouts when lucrative offers like Kovy’s are put on the table they end up signed and done as long as the people at the top have the ability to close it.

After the trade Waddell had the audacity to say “I don’t think it sets us back at all. I think it moves us forward.”

That statement reminds me of when Millen, who is regarded as one of the most incompetent GMs in NFL history, was asked by the Detroit Free Press about his 0-2 Lions start and their record-setting string of losses under his management, he responded, “What we are doing is the right thing to do . . . stay the course.”

If Waddell truly believes that removing a superstar like Ilya Kovalchuk from the team and replacing him with a rookie who hasn’t scored in 13 games, a draft pick and a few other unproven players, then like Millen it may be time for him to move on. Millen also believed and he said it himself, “My initial thought was this: If you can’t get it done in five years, get out.”Problem in Detroit was, Millen said those words but did not live by them and years later he had to be pried from his seat.

Atlanta fans are experiencing a similar situation where a GM has been granted more than an adequate amount of time to produce a winner and has not.

Waddel made a few more comments that may have the fans shaking their heads. “We’re struggling with our attendance as it is,” said Waddell, whose team is tied 11th in the Eastern Conference standings, just a few points out of playoff spot. “The only way we’re going to bring fans back is by winning hockey games.”

So do you do that by trading away your leading scorer and one of the greatest players in the world?

It’s common for GMs to deal away players for a lot less value if they believe they will not get a deal done in the off-season but this is a case where the team could have kept Kovy and at least tried to make the playoffs then possibly coax him to accept one of the deals that was offered. This would have certainly put more fans in the seats for the remainder of this year, especially if they could have gotten hot like early in the season and gone on even a short playoff run.

Now that Waddell was once again unable to retain a star player, will the ownership have the guts to make the move that many fans in Atlanta (like Detroit with Millen) have been begging for, for years? Millen never willingly agreed to resign and the same is expected of Waddell.

Over the past several years it has been more than challenging for Waddell to get players to sign here even with Kovy on the team. UFA Brian Campbell turned down a reported $60 million contract that Waddell was said to have offered and opted to go to a team located in a snow belt who hadn’t made the playoffs in years.

Last year, that trend looked like it may possibly be changing when having Kovy in a Thrashers’ uniform convinced players like Nik Antropov and Pavel Kubina to lace them up in the south. Now that Kovy is in New Jersey, many people expect these players to move on elsewhere when the opportunity arrives.

Also with Kovalchuk gone there is a strong possibility of losing two other players of the Thrashers Russian trio as well. The Thrashers obtained Maxim Afinogenov for $800,000and after a comeback season that has produced (17g-27a-44pts) ranking him first on the team in scoring, expect him to test the free agent market.

Ex-Red Wing player Slava Kozlov is the other of the trio we should expect to move on and possibly try to follow Kovy. Owning some of the league’s best shootout stats, Kozlov would help whatever team picks him up.

During this roller-coaster week of trade talks and negotiations, Kovalchuk spoke to the media. “You don’t want to be a distraction. We are in a playoff race and we are only one point from the playoffs, said the star winger. “Hopefully, we are going to figure something out.”

Waddell believed Kovy sincerely wanted to stay and said this after trading away the franchise’s best hope, “I think, Kovy right to the last day, wanted to be a Thrasher. But it’s a business decision.”

Yes it was Teflon Don, and a really bad one.
