Rare UnassistedTriple Play Ends Mets Game

NEW YORK – With his team trailing the Philadelphia Phillies 9-7 in the bottom of the 9th inning, New York Mets player Jeff Francoeur stepped up to the plate to face closer Brad Lidge. With no outs and runners on first and second, (AP Photo/Henny Ray Abrams) compliments of an error by Phillies second baseman Eric Bruntlett, the Mets called a hit-and-run.

Francoeur’s next swing would become historic.

With both runners moving, Francoeur crushed a line shot that headed straight over second base towards centerfield.

Philliies second baseman Eric Bruntlett who was heading toward the bag to cover the runner from first snagged the liner, stepped on second base in the same motion then turned and tagged the final runner, turning an unassisted triple play.

In an instant the game was over.

Bruntlett’s unassisted play was just the second to ever end a game. Detroit Tigers first baseman Johnny Neun accomplished the same feat eight decades ago on May 31, 1927.

“It’s hard to know how to react to it,” Bruntlett said. “I was almost laughing. That doesn’t happen. What do you do there? Game is over. High fives.”

Bruntlett got a rare start because Phillies manager Charlie Manuel wanted to give Chase Utley a day off.

Francoeur who earlier had made a highlight-reel catch in right field on a ball hit by Bruntlett was shocked after the game. “It was the most unbelievable play I’ve ever been involved in,” Francoeur said. “And the sickest.”

Brett Favre Reconsiders & Signs With Vikings

MINNESOTA – Let the drama begin. Brett Favre will be visiting Lambeau Field in purple this season after all.

In the biggest news to come out of Minnesota Vikings camp since WR Visanthe Shiancoe was shown (AP Photo/Morry Gash, File) naked in the locker room during post-game last year, Favre reconsidered his reconsidering retirement and signed with the Vikings on Tuesday.

After deserting the Vikings on July 28 just hours before preseason camp opened, the gray-haired, twice-retired 39-year-old hurler will be donning purple and facing his former team the Green Bay Packers in at least two contests this season.

Favre signed a deal for somewhere in the vicinity of $10 million to $12 million and actually tossed a few passes at the Vikings training facility this afternoon.

Favre arrived in St. Paul early on Tuesday, was picked up by Coach Brad Childress (pictured with Favre here) and later in the day the rest of the scenario unfolded.

Favre is a sure Hall Of Famer and holds a laundry list of records.

Lately though he has shown major signs of an aging quarterback. Last season while playing with the New York Jets his worn-out arm led the NFL with 22 interceptions and the Jets faltered late and were unable to make the playoffs.

This news may come as a surprise to many but with Favre’s history of avoiding preseason practices others saw it coming.

As of early Tuesday afternoon, current Vikings quarterbacks Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson had not commented on the Favre situation.

Vick Deserves Fresh Start in the NFL

Since Michael Vick met with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and cleared the first hurdle in returning to the NFL, Credit: APthe internet has become saturated with polls debating whether or not Goodell should have reinstated the player who was convicted of running an illegal dog-fighting ring and animal abuse.

Seeing the results of many of these polls favoring that Vick be banned from the NFL for life, it is evident how hostile and out-of-touch our country has become.

It’s like an emotional lynch-mobbing.

One Carolina television station poll showed viewers 61% in favor of a lifetime ban with comments like, “The judicial system sucks. [Vick] should be still in jail, leashed to his bunk.”

In recent history, several people have made serious mistakes, many more severe than Vick’s, but our society has elected to ignore those criminals while becoming obsessed with creating a villain out of Vick.

Over the years, the mainstream media and many of its followers have blown off the illegal behavior of corrupt politicians, athletes and businessmen, granting them forgiveness for their acts after they appear at a podium in their suit simply saying the words, “I’m sorry.”

Others like Vick pay a severe debt losing tens of millions of dollars while serving long prison sentences then find themselves battling an aggressive media and overzealous society when they are released.

What Michael Vick did was brutal, inhumane and illegal. He knows it, the general population knows it and the judicial system knows it, that’s why they acted on it so aggressively, hitting Vick with a sentence so severe, it could have destroyed the man’s life and career.

As with any other former prisoner who has paid their debt and served their time, our system is structured to offer a fair opportunity and reintroduce these United States citizens back into society.

Vick’s situation should be no different than anyone else who abused animals and served a sentence for the acts but because of his popularity many are labeling him as a villain who does not deserve the same opportunity other ex-convicts are granted.

When people fill sports blogs with comments how Vick should “never take another snap in the NFL,” where is their reasoning?

The man has spent almost two prime years of his life in prison for animal abuse. Think about that in its literal sense.

Do those opposing Vick’s return feel other ex-cons should not be allowed an opportunity to go back to the careers they had prior to their sentence? Should a bricklayer be banned from laying a roadway; an accountant banned from operating a calculator?

At the time of his conviction, Vick’s job was throwing a football in the NFL. It would be un-American to ban the accountant or bricklayer from returning to work, just as it would to ban Vick from returning to the career he had prior to his conviction.

Vick, once the highest-paid player in the NFL, released a statement regarding his return. “I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to commissioner Goodell for allowing me to be readmitted to the National Football League. As you can imagine, the last two years have given me time to re-evaluate my life, mature as an individual and fully understand the terrible mistakes I have made in the past and what type of life I must lead moving forward.”

I wish Vick the best and hope he capitalizes on an opportunity to show others how to take advantage of the opportunity granted to him by the NFL.

Thank you, Roger Goodell, for doing the right thing.

Favre Dumps Vikings Two Days Before Camp

MINNESOTA – NFL icon Brett Favre announced he has reconsidered wearing purple and will stay retired. brett-favre

In Favre fashion, the prima donna quarterback took the Vikings down to the wire when he told the Vikings on Tuesday, just 48 hours before training camp opens, that he would not team up alongside Pro Bowl running back Adrian Peterson to battle his former Green Bay Packers for the NFC North title this season.

“It was the hardest decision I’ve ever made,” Favre said. “I didn’t feel like physically I could play at a level that was acceptable. I would like to thank everyone, including the Packers, Jets and Vikings — but, most importantly, the fans.”

The Vikings now have to switch gears to ‘damage control’ since several of their star players had contacted Favre encouraging him to take snaps in a Viking uniform.

Vikings Adrian Peterson, Jared Allen and Steve Hutchinson are said to have contacted Favre by text or phone to recruit the 40-year-old slinger who had already agreed to a one-year, $10 million contract with the team.

Gallant efforts to get Favre on the roster like those made by the stars listed above may have sent a message of ‘lack of confidence’ to quarterbacks Tarvaris Jackson and newly-acquired Sage Rosenfels who are currently on the squad.

While Vikings management and coaching staff concentrate on smoothing things over in their locker room, the announcement did not come as a surprise to many of us.

With Favre’s history of stringing teams along, many of us expected these results while some seemed oblivious to Favre’s past history.

Vikings linebacker Ben Leber told the AP, “When I heard the news, I was probably as surprised and shocked as everybody else. The writing on the wall was as long as his arm was healthy he was going to play. I really expected him to be at camp. I was really surprised.”

FYI Mr. Leber, Favre seems to write on the wall with one hand while holding an eraser in the other.

Erin Andrews Naked Video

SAN FRANCISCO – I’m still in San Francisco for meetings until later in the week but had several emails inquiring about the story about erin-andrewsESPN reporter Erin Andrews being filmed naked by a voyeur in a hotel room.

Although I do not have time to investigate or research the story, our friends at Deadspin covered it so I will send Sports Climax readers to the Deadspin story here.

Also make it known that as much as we at Sports Climax love showcasing beautiful women as we reiterate in our Sexiest Female Athletes Gallery and Hottest NFL and NBA Cheerleaders Gallery, we do not condone people who spy on others and post naked pictures and or video throughout the Internet against their will.

We hope they locate the maker of the Erin Andrews naked video.

In the meantime, thousands of Internet voyeurs have themselves fallen prey to hackers, who spread a virus on bogus sites claiming to have the video.

Phelps Sets World Record in 100-Meter Butterfly

INDIANA – American 14-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps beat Ian Crocker’s world record in the 100-meter butterfly Phelps at the U.S. national championships Thursday at the Indiana University Natatorium, finishing the event in 50.22 seconds.

Crocker’s record 50.40 had been set at the world championships in Montreal in 2005.

The two swimmers have competed head-to-head in several events over the years including at the Beijing Olympics where Phelps defeated Crocker to take Gold in the 100-meter fly.

After setting the record, Phelps received a message from his rival and commented on Crocker’s ability and good sportsmanship.

“Crock actually texted me after and wished me all the luck and telling me that was my record,” Phelps said. “That meant a lot, from a competitor and a friend and a classy guy. We had amazing battles back and forth. Those are something I definitely miss.”

Phelps who is rebounding from the photo that showed the star toking on a bong will be competing at the world championships later this month in Rome.

In addition to seeing Phelps’ record-setting laps in the pool, look for him in an upcoming run of Subway sandwich commercials later this month.

LeBron James ‘infomercial’ Needs to Stop

ORLANDO – After NBA MVP LeBron James made his historic, buzzer-beating 3-pointer in Game 2 of the Eastern (Joshua Gunter/The Plain Dealer)Conference Finals against the Orlando Magic, he was swamped by media and welcomed the hype and exposure.

After the astounding 96-95 victory James was ecstatic and sat with the media during post-game to continue the NBA’s ‘King James Infomercial’. “For me, a second is a long time,” James said. “For others, it’s very short. That is the biggest shot I’ve made in my career.”

With a millisecond left on the clock, James’ released the ball with a smooth flick of his wrist, sinking  the high-pressure, historic shot. Much of the media jumped on the opportunity to compare it to another famous NBA moment, Michael Jordan making “The Shot” against the Cavaliers years ago in a playoff game.

When asked about “The Shot” James replied, “That guy’s not in the league anymore. The other 23 is on the good side now.”

The King James infomercial was picking up steam, the media circus in overdrive.

James is the type of player that only comes along every quarter of a century and he is expected to sign the hugest contract in NBA or even sports history, one that may make A-Rod’s quarter-billion-dollar contract ($250 million) look like pocket change.

While LeBron speaks about how he would like to become the world’s first “billion dollar athlete” the media spends it’s time validating James’ monetary worth to the world, feeding fans and NBA organizations countless articles and coverage of his greatness, reminding them that “King James” is living up to his title.

Fast-forward to Game 6 of the same Eastern Conference Finals in Orlando at Amway Arena. This night offered no opportunity for heroics. On this night Dwight Howard and his Magic smoked James and the Cavaliers off the court, sending them packing for the season.

James stormed off the court carrying with him the burden of his poorest performance of the Eastern Conference Finals, a 28-point, 8-for-20 night.

The media, just as they did when James waltzed off the court after nailing his historic 3-pointer, filled the locker room ready to gather a few comments from NBA’s superstar.

Those recorders would have to wait another day as James’ responded with a quick shower, a headset full of music and a strut out to the team bus, ignoring the same people who have been most instrumental in promoting him throughout his career.

How do you suppose the writers at the Cleveland Plain Dealer, ESPN and NBA.com should feel? A little bitter and slighted maybe?

James deserves the same recourse any other athlete would receive from the media after pulling a stunt like that. Normally a spokesman for the team, James left his teammates out to dry that night, deserting them and leaving them to face the music.

The response from the media should be to discontinue the ‘LeBron infomercial’, stopping all excessive promotion and start spreading the xposure around.

Dwight Howard said he, “was surprised” that James did not congratulate him after the game and quite frankly so was most everyone else.

James finally spoke to the media the following day claiming he is “not a bad sport.” Most say he is and you can add lack of class to that. In a recent poll taken at his hometown paper The Cleveland Plain Dealer a majority of Cavs fans said LeBron was indeed a bad sport while only 26% said LeBron was not a bad sport. And that is a poll from the hometown fans.

When asked about his bitter exit James asked why would he want to congratulate another player or team after his team was just “beaten up by them.”

Why? Because it’s good sportsmanship. It’s a positive message to all the youngsters who purchase his jerseys to wear to the games and around their neighborhoods.

How many times have we seen King James mingling with his opponents and accepting congratulatory remarks and handshakes after “beating them up.” James appears to have a double standard and it is embarrassing for the Cavaliers organization although they will never admit it.

Admitting it could possibly hinder the team’s chances of re-signing the MVP.

The media on the other hand has the professional responsibility to direct a huge spotlight on the topic.

Quenneville Ducks Accountability During Post-Game

CHICAGO – Most of the “Original Six rivalry” and “young vs. old” hype that was orchestrated by the NHL to promote the Red Wings Detroit/Chicago Western Conference Finals series was laid to rest well before the final seconds mercifully ticked off the clock for Sunday’s Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks Game Four.

Not many teams in professional sports have the depth and resiliency of the Red Wings.

Playing without their Captain Nicklas Lidstrom and two of their Alternate Captains Kris Draper and Pavel Datsyuk, the Red Wings still were able to take the young, inexperienced Blackhawks to school, cake-walking to a lopsided 6-1 win at the United Center in Chicago.

Instead of pointing fingers at his young players and demanding accountability to light a spark before the next game, Coach Joel Quenneville instead showed the same immaturity as his players and took the gutless route of blaming a referee for his team’s lackluster performance.

“Worst call in the history of sports at the end of the second period,” said the mentally-drained coach during his obligatory post-game press conference. “They [the refs] ruined a great hockey game. It was that call. I have never seen anything like it”.

Really. Haven’t seen anything like it?

How about the bad call just 48 hours earlier when a five-minute major and game misconduct penalty was called on Niklas Kronwall after he legally laid out Blackhawk Martin Havlat, knocking him into opening faceoff 2010?

The call on Kronwall affected the game. It handed a five-minute power play to the Blackhawks and sent Kronwall to the locker room early in the game. In case you missed it, the call Quennville is referring to is a two-minute minor that was called at the end of the period.

It was the play when several players congregated with what the announcers like to refer to as “a little face-washing”. It was the play where Blackhawks star Patrick Kane glided in and speared a Red Wing player in the back, was scolded by a referee but was let off the hook.

I agree that the referees made a mistake; the call should have been on Kane but either way the referees were doing what they need to do in a game where things could explode any minute; they were keeping control of the game and calling it tight. It is Quenneville’s job to know that and to communicate that to his players so they don’t self-implode like they did on Sunday.

With immature comments like Quenneville made during his post-game press conference, it’s confirms that the Blackhawks organization lacks leadership in the locker room and behind the bench.

Instead of taking part of the blame and demanding accountability from his players, Quenneville offered his youngsters a lame excuse for the loss, a two-minute minor penalty called midway through the game. In addition to accountability, adjustments need to be made between periods and game plans need tweaking throughout a series, things Quenneville has been unable to do and his frustration shows that.

A call may possibly have bearing on the outcome of an evenly-played game like the “too-many men on the ice” penalty that was called in the final minutes of a classic Boston Bruins/Montreal Canadians Finals game during the late 70’s. That game was tied at the time of the call and Montreal scored and went on to win that contest and the series.

This game however was much different then that night in Montreal. This contest was an embarrassing blowout and the ice was tilted towards the Blackhakwks goal from the opening faceoff. Quenneville’s Blackhawks lost because they were dominated, outclassed and outskated by older but wiser legs.

You have to sense ex-Red Wing coach Scotty Bowman hovering over Quenneville and the Blackhawks as they self-destruct during the most crucial time of the season.

Bowman, who was behind the Montreal bench in that late 70’s match-up against the Bruins, had a much different style than Quennville’s. Bowman demanded accountability from his players and went as far as trading team sniper Dino Ciccarelli and assigning forward Sergei Federov to play defense until he learned to be a two-way player.

The Blackhawks are deservingly the talk of the NHL this year after creating the youngest roster in the league, setting franchise records during the season and carrying that momentum into the playoffs. They defeated the Calgary Flames and upset the #3 seed Vancouver Canucks to advance to the Western Conference Finals against Detroit.

Young rosters can keep a locker room loose but being too wet behind the ears can also have disadvantages like we are seeing in this series.

None of their players, or Coach Quenneville for that matter, were capable of stepping up and calming down the raucous bunch of youths as the team was called for 13 minor penalties (nine of them for roughing) and two players were sent to the showers early–Kris Versteeg (10-minute misconduct) and Ben Eager (two 10-minute misconducts and a game misconduct).

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out you cannot give a team like the Red Wings a bunch of power play opportunities and expect to steal another win.

While Lidstrom, Datsyuk and Draper watched from the sidelines, several of the Red Wings stepped up closing the holes they had left in the roster.

Marian Hossa and Henrik Zetterberg each emerged from scoring droughts netting two goals each while Valtteri Filppula, playing in Datsyuk’s spot, scored his 1st of the playoffs and set up both of Hossa’s goals.

At times the game looked reminiscent of the first two games of last year’s Stanley Cup Finals against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Like those contests, Detroit glided around the ice at will, uncontested, sharing the puck like a passing drill until someone felt like firing a shot. Their puck control dominance tamed the sold-out United Center crowd and took the fans right out of the game.

Multi-million dollar UFA signee Cristobal Huet started his first playoff game since 2008 and was chased after giving up the fourth Red Wing goal. He was replaced by a kid named Corey Crawford who looks so young, I expected the referees to ask for signed parental permission for him to play in the game.

The first shot the youngster faced beat him clean and rang off two goalposts before he, like Huet, fell victim to the dominate Red Wings. Crawford gave up one goal on 7 shots before being replaced by Huet at the start of the 3rd period.

The Blackhawks looked totally lost throughout the game. From Coach Joel Quenneville looking stunned behind the bench to Patrick Kane (one SOG and 3 giveaways) to their 20-year-old captain Jonathon Toews, the NHL’s youngest captain who wasn’t even born when Red Wing Chris Chelios began playing in the NHL.

Chelios, the Chicago native, saw action Sunday for the first time in this Original Six series skating 6 shifts for 4:37 minutes of ice time. He was greeted with a chorus of boos whenever he touched the puck-a little left-over bitterness for him leaving the Windy City to play for the rival Red Wings a decade ago.

For formality purposes, Game Five will be in Detroit on Wednesday.

In the meantime, let’s hope if there is a Red Wing vs. Penguins rematch, it can live up to whatever hype the NHL creates for it, unlike this Conference Finals dud.

Otherwise NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman will be looking at another Stanley Cup Finals beaten in the Neilson Ratings by a cartoon with a guy named Sponge Bob.

Lions miss out on the draft of the decade

NEW YORK – During this past weekend’s NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions failed to take advantage of stealing several first-round nfldraftprojected players that were staring them right in the face. Snagging these prospects would have patched up several of their holes in their defense and guaranteed them several sure starters for next season.

While many people commented on how ‘genius’ the Lions front office looked by trading their top pick in the 3rd round for three of the N.Y. Jets picks, a former projected first-round pick, 6′ 7″ 260-lb DE Michael Johnson from Georgia Tech was waiting in the wings for a team that would steal him in the third round.

Possibly a Pro-Bowler one day, Johnson’s resume is overflowing with accomplishments that include a record amount of blocked kicks, several forced fumbles, sacks, the tons of awards; the list goes on and on.

If the Lions went into the draft thinking defense, Johnson would have been the fourth pick in what would have clearly been the best draft of any of the NFL teams for 2009 and possible one of the best drafts over the past decade.

Here’s the scenario that was passed up by the Lions.

First overall- LB Aaron Curry and the fans go wild in support.

First round pick #20 – DT Peria Jerry and the fans start believing the Lions new front office knows football. They actually begin to envision a defense on the way to recovery.

First pick in 2nd round (#33 overall) – MLB Rey Maualuga. Fierce hitter, once projected top-ten pick and the steal of the draft. The Lions fans at Ford Field get their chants for “Rey” answered and actually start wanting to inquire about purchasing season tickets.

Third round selection- DE Michael Johnson 6′ 7″ 260 dynamic player; once predicted a top-ten overall pick. Lions fans say, “Who?” but after reading the player’s bio and hearing ESPN analysts start referring to the Lions as being the winner in the draft, their eyes begin to water up, they want to send apologies to Mayhew for all the names they had called him and begin to fantasize about a playoff game within a few years.

All of these players were at some time projected first-round picks and all were available and passed up by the Lions. Adding these four defensive stars would have created a defensive line that included Grady Jackson, Dwayne White, Peria Jerry and Michael Johnson and a linebacker group of Julian Peterson, Ernie Sims and Rey Maualuga.

Overnight the NFL worst defense would find itself with hitters like Sims and Maualuga and could have been one of the more punishing and feared groups in the league while moving way up the ladder against the run.

With Coach Schwartz being a defense specialist, this scenario would have put the Lions as the biggest winners in the draft while filling several of their important needs.

If this upcoming season again features average running backs setting personal-best records every Sunday while running at will against another Lions sieve-filled defense, Lions’ fans can only shake their heads and again say, “Maybe in next year’s draft.”
