Bitch-Slap-of-the-Week – Childress & the Vikes

This week’s Slap-of-the-Week is a slam dunk and it goes to Brad Childress and his Minnesota Vikings for running up thePhoto: Tom Olmscheid Reuters score in a lopsided NFL playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys.  Brett Favre gets an open-handed backhand thrown his way as well just for good measure.

With the Vikings dominating the scoreboard 27-3 with 1:55 to go it was fourth-and-3. Favre and the offense were in perfect position to hand off the ball and continue to run out the clock.

Instead, Favre dropped back to pass and connected with Visanthe Shiancoe on an 11-yard strike, extending the lead to 31 points.

That’s right. The Vikings had just embarrassed the Cowboys on national television but a 24-point win wasn’t enough for Favre and his Vikings. This cheesy move was right out of the playbook of Steve Spurrier when he was at University of Florida and his Gators were notorious for running it up.

Announcers Joe Buck and Troy Aikman commented on how throwing in that situation was ‘rubbing salt in the wound’ and how unusual it was to throw in that situation. See video on NFL.com here.

Cowboys’ linebacker Keith Brooking took offense to the classless move. “I just thought what happened at the end of the game was disrespectful, and it was classless,” Brooking said, according to the team’s official blog. “All the things that are in that category, I’ll throw out to the Vikings organization and whoever is over there calling the plays. It just wasn’t the right thing to do at that time, period.”

Childress did a really poor job at explaining and defending the move during the postgame news conference.
“Just staying aggressive with it, if you will,” Childress said. SLAP! There Brad, we’re staying aggressive too and throwing another bitch-slap right off the top of that head!

“Lou Holtz used to say, ‘It’s our job to score points. It’s their job to stop us from scoring points.’ That happens. It wasn’t rubbing it in. It’s just taking care of business and being aggressive at the end of the game.” Childress added.

SLAP! Have another backhander. It’s not your job to throw on fourth-and-3 in a game that’s clearly going to end in a blowout.

Many believe Favre was padding his stats at the expense of his opponent. When asked about running up the score Favre said, “I didn’t see that.” Bull! You were running up the score.

We all know not to take Favre’s comment to heart. There’s a huge possibility he will change his mind in the near future, then probably change it again, and again, and again.

Vikings coaching staff, you lacked class with that move and embarrassed your organization. For that you get the Sports Climax Bitch-Slap-of-the-Week.

Avatar Surpasses $1 Billion – ESPN Announces 3D Sports

Around the time James Cameron’s masterpiece box-office hit Avatar surpassed $1 billion and brought a new meaning to the term 3D3D, ESPN reported they will launch the first 3D television network.

ESPN 3D will showcase a minimum of 85 live sporting events during its first year, beginning with the first 2010 FIFA World Cup match on June 11 between South Africa and Mexico.

In addition to the World Cup opener, ESPN will produce up to 25 total World Cup matches, as well as the Summer X Games, college basketball, and college football, including the BCS National Championship game in Glendale, Ariz., January 10, 2011.

ESPN has been testing ESPN 3D for more than two years and produced USC’s 18-15 win over Ohio State in 3D for select theaters back in September.

This network launch will certainly drive the early adoption of 3D TV sets, while combining “great content with new technology to enhance the fan’s viewing experience,” according to ESPN President, George Bodenheimer.

ESPN went on to report that “Even more events will soon be announced, and we’re crossing our fingers that the following shows make the cut”

Around the 3D Horn: All of the guest hosts will appear to sit in a semi-circle around an actual horn, reminiscent of the conch from Lord of the Flies.

Bitch-Slap-of-the-Week – Gilbert Arenas & His Gun

The Washington Wizards of the NBA recently awarded star player Gilbert Arenas with a $111 million contract,Gilbert Arenas trusting and expecting the player to lead the team back into contention for an NBA title.

Instead, the troubled player has his team sitting in the cellar of the Southeast Division with a dismal 10-20 record, four teams away from the nearest playoff spot.

To make matters a whole lot worse, Arenas interviews this week will be including law enforcement officials.

The New York Post report that Arenas had a confrontation in the Wizards’ locker room with teammate Javaris Crittenton that led to both players having guns in their hands has been confirmed by a league source. According to that source, the incident may have involved a debt of $25,000 that Arenas owed Crittenton.

NBA VP of communications Tim Frank released a statement Friday confirming that law enforcement is involved. “There is an active investigation by D.C. law enforcement authorities, which we are monitoring closely. We are not taking any independent action at this time.”

Anyone reading this must certainly be wondering what cave Arenas was hiding in during all the media coverage of the Plaxico Burress incident. How Plaxico, an NFL star, was charged with a felony, prosecuted and sentenced to serve time. How that series of events involving a handgun had squashed the man’s career and more importantly, his life.

Arenas certainly must know as much or more detail about the Plaxico event than most of us yet he still felt above the law, stored a weapon in his locker and made the decision to pull it out in view of others in the room.

Slllaaaaaaaappp!!!!!!

That was the sound of a Bitch-Slap-of-the-Week.

Sllaaaappp! And there’s another, your team isn’t called the Washington Bullets anymore!  (Washington changed the team name from the Bullets to the Wizards in 1997 because the owner didn’t like the violent overtones of the name ‘Bullets’.)

There comes a point and time where the general public, fans and the media stop feeling sorry for some of these players and this may be that time. If Arenas is found to have broken laws and is prosecuted for this asinine ordeal, the Wizards could come out big winners.

The first word you go to the team’s website is the word “character”. Imagine how much “character” the organization can buy with the $100 million of cash that would be freed up if Arenas ends up out of the league, down the same path as Plaxico.

Sllaapp! Had to throw an extra one in there on this one.

Tim Tebow Shatters Records in Sugar Bowl Win

NEW ORLEANS, LA. – Tim Tebow went out with a sonic bang!

(AP Photo/Bill Haber)The Florida Gators’ quarterback completed his first 12 passes and led his Gators (13-1) to scores on the first five possessions in a 51-24 shellacking over No. 4 Cincinnati (12-1) in the New Years Day Sugar Bowl Game.

Tebow, last year’s Heisman Trophy winner, finished with a record 533 total yards. That performance is the best in BCS history, topping former Texas Longhorn quarterback Vince Young’s record of 467 yards that was set during the 2005 Rose Bowl.

Tebow threw for a career-high 482 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 51 yards and another score.

“It was incredible,” said Tebow. “Just a great game. It was exactly how you want to go out with these seniors and these coaches in your last game and your last time together. It just really doesn’t get any better than this.”

Tebow and Coach Urban Meyer stood together singing the school fight song for the final time before heading to the locker room for post-game.

Danica Patrick Takes Test Drive at Daytona International Speedway

DAYTONA BEACH – ESPN reported that Danica Patrick will make her ARCA debut on Feb. 6 at Daytona International Speedway but has Danica Patrick not decided on whether she will begin what will be a 13-race Nationwide Series schedule for JRM at Daytona or wait until the next week at California.

Danica said there’s a 50-percent chance it will happen at Daytona, but first she wants to learn more about the car. She also has to get NASCAR’s approval, which likely won’t come until after the ARCA race.

Danica did take her first test run in Daytona today for the team co-owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and completed a total of five laps, reaching a maximum speed of 176.142 mph.

That speed is almost 50 mph off the IndyCar pace at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Bitch-Slap-of-the-Week – The Pittsburgh Steelers

After losing to the 2-11 Cleveland Browns 13-6 Thursday night in front of a national television audience and Photo: Peter Diana / Post-Gazette throwing all but their mathematical chances of a playoff spot down the drain, the 6-7 Pittsburgh Steelers get this week’s Slap-of-the-Week.

The loss was the 5th in a row for the Steelers drawing sharp criticism from some of their local columnists like Ron Cook who pulled no punches.

The Browns attacked Ben Roethlisberger from the start, sacking the scrambling QB eight times during a night where temps were reported to be -12 below zero chill factor at kickoff time.

Here are a few post-game quotes from the under-achievers who were last year’s Super Bowl Champions.

WR Hines Ward: “To lose five straight coming off a Super Bowl from last year, it’s embarrassing for me. It just hurts, it hurts a lot. There’s nothing fun about losing games, especially five in a row. We’re better than that, we should play better than that.”

WR Mike Wallace: “It was like every time I go out for a pass, when I looked back, he’d be getting hit,” referring to quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. “I’d just be coming out of my break and he’d be going down.”

Coach Mike Tomlin: “I thought they fought. I thought they stuck together, but it wasn’t enough to win the football game. … Fighting and sticking together are not winning football games. We’re finding new and different ways to not rise up. This one tonight happened in all three phases.”

Tackle Willie Colon: “This was probably the worst we played up front all year. I know it was probably my worst game. I feel like I let the line down.”

Defensive Back Deshea Townsend: “Mind-boggling.”

Nose Tackle Casey Hampton: “Like a bad dream. [The season] is a wrap, this [explicate] is a wrap.”

Yes it is. It’s not only a wrap but it’s a full-on Bitch-Slap to go along with your record for most consecutive losses (5) for a Super Bowl winner the season following a Super Bowl win.

Bitch-Slap-of-the-Week – Jay Cutler and Da’ Bears

After giving up 537 total yards in a 36-10 blowout loss to the Minnesota Vikings and longtime archenemy Brett Favre and dropping their record to 4-7, (AP Photo/Andy King)the Chicago Bears earned the Slap-of-the-Week.

This team is the biggest embarrassment in the NFL right now. More than the Browns, Lions and Rams because this team has talent and still can’t figure it out.

After starting the year 3-1, Da’ Bears have been on a high-speed spiral, losing 6 of the last 7, while being outplayed, out-hustled and taken to school on both sides of the ball.

While Da’ Bears continue this self-imploding act, injured linebacker Brian Urlacher had a few harsh words to Yahoo! Sports this week that sounded like a slap in the face to Bears’ quarterback Jay Cutler.

“I hate the way our identity has changed,” said Urlacher. “We used to establish the run and wear teams down and try not to make mistakes. Kyle Orton might not be the flashiest quarterback, but the guy is a winner, and that formula worked for us. I hate to say it, but that’s the truth.”

Much of the blame is being placed on Cutler who was obtained during the off-season and expected to turn the franchise around. Instead, Cutler leads the league in interceptions (20), throwing more than rookies Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez and sits near the bottom of the pack with a 74.4 quarterback rating. If it gets any worse, you may begin to hear Bears fans chant for their past failure Rex Grossman.

Cutler was featured in our story, “Cutler Leads 49ers to Victory”after throwing 5 interceptions and gift-wrapping a 10-6 victory to the Niners earlier this season and defensive lineman Tommie Harris was slammed by his teammates and the media after upper-cutting a defenseless Arizona Cardinals player in the face after a whistle during another blowout embarrassing loss.

While Cutler lacks the support of any running game, offensive line or defense, there are plenty of other places to point the finger so we at Sports Climax are pointing an open hand full of fingers in the organization’s general direction, hauling off and giving Da’ Bears this week’s Bitch-Slap-of-the-Week.

In the meantime, we anxiously await the Bears’ final game of the season in Detroit to see if the rebuilding Lions will feast on this stumbling once-feared rival.

Larry Johnson Signs With Bengals

CINCINNATI – ESPN reported that running back Larry Johnson and his excessive baggage landed in Cincinnati after signing a one-year deal. (AP Photo/Dick Whipple, File)

Bengals’ coach Marvin Lewis told Johnson he will be fourth on the depth chart behind injured Cedric Benson and the remaining running back core.

The 7-2 division-leading Bengals signed Johnson as an
insurance policy and are only responsible for only about 255K of his salary this year.

The Kansas City Chiefs are the financial losers in this scenario as they are obligated to fork over approximately $4 million to a player who hasn’t produced any impressive on-field numbers over the past few years; just a lot of off-field stress and distractions.

The latest news from the Bengals’ camp concerning Benson’s injury is that he is expected to play this weekend.
