Legend John Wooden dead at 99

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The sports world has lost a true legend; UCLA basketball coach John Wooden has passed away at the age of 99.

Wooden made his mark on the game behind the bench for the UCLA Bruins for 27 years and finished with a 620-147 record including 47 NCAA tournament wins. His overall career coaching record is 885-203, an astounding .813 winning percentage.

During that 27 year tenure as coach of the Bruins, Wooden had an unprecedented run of 7 consecutive titles from 1967through 1973 and a record 88-game winning streak in the early 1970s. During that stretch, Wooden guided his teams to four 30-0 seasons.

Wooden learned about challenge early in life when he was born on a farm that had no electricity or indoor plumbing. Although baseball was his favorite sport, Wooden was glued to the basketball rim that was nailed to a hayloft where he would shoot with his brother Maurice.

Those years of practice and dedication led to Wooden learning how to lead and win. In high school he was a member of a team that won the Indiana state championship in 1927 and later won a national college championship as an All-American at Purdue his senior season.

Building a strong reputation as a coach, Wooden attracted star players that included Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul Jabbar), Bill Walton and Jamaal Wilkes that led to the dominated runs.

Wooden is the only person to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach.

MLB Ump Jim Joyce

Choosing this week’s Bitch-Slap-of-the-Week is easy when there’s a guy like MLB umpire Jim Joyce around.

Unless you have been locked away in solitary confinement or just awakening from an alcohol-induced coma, you are sure to have heard of the horse’s ass ump who botched the call taking a perfect game away from Detroit pitcher, Armando Galarraga, screwing my homies in the Motor City.

Here’s the recap:

With two outs in the 9th inning at Comerica Park in Detroit, young starter Galarraga is one pitch away from hurling the first perfect game in Detroit Tigers franchise history.

The fans are on their feet under the lights, sports fans from around the country are glued to their TV sets watching live feeds anticipating being a part of a historical baseball moment.

Next pitch, it’s a ground ball, Galarranga covers the bag, the throw is on target and in time, the fans and Tigers are ready to erupt in celebration . . .

. . . UNTIL . . . some blind, overpaid fat bastard converts the climactic moment into a total BUZZ KILL, calling the runner safe.

Replays later showed the runner was clearly out by almost a half of step.

SLAP! There’s one right in the chops from the Detroit Tigers organization Mr. Joyce.

SLAAAPP! Have another backhander from the rest of the baseball fans around the country who were glued to their seats wanting to be a part of baseball history.

THUMP! For the first time ever, a swift kick square in the nuts is thrown in because a Bitch-Slap in this case is not near enough.

Our editor at Sports Climax covered this in a more civilized manner comparing Joyce’s gaffe to Bill Buckner’s screw-up during the 1986 World Series as far as notoriety goes but we get pissed off in this column and don’t wanna lay low like that.

In addition to getting Bitch-Slapped and kicked in his junk here on Sports Climax, an anti-Joyce Facebook page was created shortly after the game and a website called FireJimJoyce.com was launched.

I know there’s rumor that the guy who covers up steroid abuse really good, what’s his name . . . Bud Selig, the MLB Commissioner, is considering taking a break from his drug cover-up operation to consider reversing the shiat call made by Joyce.

The game would then go into the history books as a perfect game but all of us fans who were glued to our sets will never be given back that moment that was taken away by Joyce.

After reviewing the play and realizing how bad he f***ed up an obvious call, Joyce said:

“It was the biggest call of my career, and I kicked the [swear word inserted here] out of it. I just cost that kid a perfect game.”

Yes you did, Mr. Joyce. And you cost MLB the opportunity to boast about two stud-performance perfect games in a week and three in this young season and fo9r that you get our Bitch-Slap-of-the-Week.

Lawrence Taylor arrested for sex related crime

NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor is back in the news and unfortunately for him it includes cheesing for another lawrence taylor mugshotmugshot, shown here, and getting hit with a sex related felony charge.Just as the world was settling down from the Tiger Woods sex scandals, the 51-year-old Taylor, a defensive standout for the New York Giants, was arrested for the alleged statutory rape of a 16-year-old girl.

Police in Rockland County, New York said Taylor paid $300 to engage in sex with the runaway minor at a Holiday Inn.

Taylor who recently showed a few decent moves as a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars” may have a hard time dancing around this one. If convicted, these charges bring a potential jail term of up to five years.

Taylor denied the charges and his lawyer, Arthur L. Aidala confirmed that to The New York Times on Thursday:

“He’s denying the whole thing. We’re going to fight these charges as hard as he fought when he was a linebacker for the New York Giants.”

If this incident takes one of the grittiest players in the history of the NFL down, it will give a new meaning to the line, “I stayed at a Holiday Inn Once.”

Super Saver wins muddy Kentucky Derby

LOUISVILL, KY. – The 136th Kentucky Derby officially has a winner on the books. After several kentucky derby muddy trackhours of on-and-off rainstorms muddied the track at Churchill Downs, the 20 horses took their spots and battled the severe conditions with Super Saver coming in ahead of the group with a time of 2:04.45.

After the rain battered the track early Saturday, the normal early morning workouts were postponed early Saturday with trainers opting to trot their horses inside the barns.

At race time, Looking At Lucky was listed as the favorite at 7-1, the longest odds ever for a Kentucky Derby favorite.

Due to the sloppy track conditions the analysts couldn’t agree on predicting the winner.

A late bet of $100,000 was placed on Super Saver at 8-1. After the $100,000 bet was placed, the odds for Super Saver actually moved to match Looking At Lucky at 7-1.

The odds on the Thoroughbreds changed like a shaky stock market over the past few days due to the horrible track conditions.

Placing was Ice Box and also coming in the money at third was Paddy O’Prado.

LaGarrette Blount this year’s sleeper of the NFL draft

Oregon Ducks running back LeGarrette Blount may be the sleeper of this year’s draft, literally.

lagarrette blount sleepingWhile still waiting for his name to be called during the final rounds of the NFL 2010 Draft, Blount was caught by ESPN cameras taking a nap.

Last season, Blount instantly became a member of the Hall of Shame when he sucker-punched an opposing Boise State Broncos player after being taunted after his team’s loss.

Before cold-cocking that player, Blount was projected by many draft analysts to go in the 3rd round.

Unfortunately, Blount never heard his name before the gavel hit and the draft was over.

But this story doesn’t end here.

Shortly after the draft, along comes San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary galloping in on a horse in shining armor, signing the undrafted player. This could prove to be a great move by the 49ers. Blount is a strong runner with talent and strong competitive nature with the ability to run over a few NFL linebackers if given the chance.

Though crucified by the public and many sports sites, including us after that incident, Blount deserves a chance to find a permanent spot on an NFL roster and is our hands-down pick for ‘sleeper’ of the draft.

Editor’s Note: Shortly after this article was written, LaGarrette jumped ship from the 49ers and instead signed with the Titans.

Brian Bosworth suing his NFL agent

High-profile NFL agent Gary Wichard who represents Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen and running back C.J.brian bosworthSpiller is facing pretty strong accusations that go along with a lawsuit filed by ex-NFL player Brian Bosworth.

Boz said he is out more than $2 million and is blaming Wichard.

Bosworth also said the agent had assured him that his investments were protected but it turns out, the financial advisor may have had a history of bad financial deals with another NFL player.

According to sources, the suit alleges that Wichard had direct knowledge that the business manager in question “had engaged in fraudulent activity.”

Bosworth’s lawsuit is asking for punitive damages, general damages and economic damages.

N.J. Man Arrested After Intentionally Barfing on Fans at MLB Game

PHILADELPHIA, PA. – Some people just aren’t showing a lot of common sense when it comes to behavior at a pro phillies-fan-mugshotsporting event and Matthew Clemmens of Cherry Hill, New Jersey may be one of them.

Police are still sorting out the details surrounding Clemmens being cuffed and removed from Citizens Bank Park during a game after he was accused of intentionally barfing on a man and his daughter.

Off duty police officer Michael Vangelo and his two daughters settled into their seats for a game against the Washington Nationals and according to Vangelo, a group of obnoxious dudes began throwing a bunch of F-bombs and other vulgarities around.

After Vangelo’s daughter asked the men to stop, the problem evolved. “I had beer thrown on me and water and then one individual started spitting at the back of my daughter’s chair and he actually spit on my 11-year-old daughter,” Vangelo said.

According to police, after Vangelo had stadium ushers remove the group, Clemmens decided to get involved, got behind Vangelo’s daughter, shoved his finger down his throat and projectile-puked on the innocent girl.

“He leaned forward, he projectile vomited all over me and my daughter,” Vangelo said. “It was the most vile and disgusting thing I’ve ever seen and I’ve been a cop for 20 years.”

After the assault, surrounding fans gang-piled on Clemmens to help subdue him then he was arrested.

By the looks of Clemmens’ photo that was released by Philly Police, the group did a decent job of detaining the obnoxious fan.
