NFL nicknames ‘Holy obnoxious wideouts Batman!’

NFL nicknames. . . . so what’s involved with creating one?

Look at this recent Twitter tweet from ESPN analyst Adam Shefter:

“The two Panthers scheduled to visit our bus today are Smash and Dash, RBs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.”

This ingenious nickname derives from the power and strength of Jonathan Stewart matched with the speed and agility of DeAngelo Williams, thus giving us ‘Smash’ and ‘Dash’. However, as with any great nickname, there is some controversy involved.

According to legend, the nickname ‘Smash and Dash’ was originally created by LenDale White and Chris Johnson. Not wanting to give up the rights to the name, White renamed the two Panthers RB’s, ‘Identity’ and ‘Theft’. Obviously, Stewart and Williams did not approve of this new name and arguments ensued.

Are you kidding me? Are these four players seriously fighting over this nickname? ‘Smash and Dash’ sounds like something the ambiguously gay duo would come up with. I honestly would not be surprised if Ace and Gary went out on a mission as Smash and Dash.

Between ‘Batman and Robin’ and ‘Smash and Dash’, the NFL is starting to sound like a comic book. What happened to the good ole days when football nicknames were original?

A time when ‘Sweetness’ had nothing to do with your taste buds, when ‘The Refrigerator’ was more than a kitchen appliance and when there was nobody closer to the sky than Ed ‘Too Tall’ Jones. A time when NFL nicknames were pertinent.

During the 1970’s, we were introduced to ‘The Steel Curtain’. This name not only represented the Pittsburgh Steelers fierce defensive style, but it sent a message to all others in the league; if you try to get past us, you will fail.

The in the mid 80’s along came ‘The Monsters of the Midway’. This nickname also struck fear into the hearts of opponents and led the Chicago Bears to one of the most impressive wins in Super Bowl history.

But now it seems like that tradition is long gone. Today’s nicknames are generic and maintain no significance whatsoever.

For instance, let’s investigate NFL wideouts Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco. These are two of the most stubborn wide receivers in the league, both notorious for complaining about teammates (unless it’s Tony Romo). They have exactly zero experience playing together and as far as we know, neither live in Gotham City. So, how exactly does that qualify them to be named after the most dynamic duo ever, Batman and Robin?

The answer is simple; it doesn’t.

These two situations just prove that NFL nicknames are about as relevant as Nicholas Cage. I think it’s time that we revoke player’s rights to nickname one another, and we just start again from scratch.

Unfortunately, Chad Ochocinco found a loophole…

T.O. misses flight, misspells Cincinnati

Appears Terrell Owens won’t make that great of a first impression after all in Cincinnati after the flamboyant wide receiver missed his flight, causing a rescheduling of his welcome news conference.

T.O. will address the media tonight instead and was on Twitter communicating with his followers and fans after the gaffe.

T.O. on Twitter: “Cincinatti Bound!!!”

Trey Wingo on Twitter:  “So…T.O misses flight to camp..and misspells Cincinnati en route. Remember..you only get one chance to make a 1st impression.”

T.O. back to Wingo: “Okayyyyyy I got it now, 2 n’s & 1 t! CINCINNATI!! LOL!”

It’s all in fun but many people were hitting the social sites proclaiming “Here we go!” or “Let the circus begin.”

For starters, T.O. has brought the spotlight with him everywhere he has gone; that’s expected. And it’s not a big deal that a player would miss a flight, unless of course it’s T.O. then it’s going to get the media in a frenzy.

Regardless of how or why he missed the flight, expect T.O. to bring his act to the news conference and if you think that may be a colorful display of character, wait until teammate Ochocinco and T.O.’s first TD celebration in the endzone.

What are the Vegas odds on fines coming from that inaugural celebration?

Giants Spoil Cowboys Opener; Ochocinco Does Lambeau Leap

The New York Giants ruined the Dallas Cowboys big bash at the opening game in the new Cowboys Stadium Sunday AP Photo: Mike Roemer night defeating the ‘Boys 33-31.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones showed off the $1.2 billion structure to a raucous crowd of over 105,000 that included several past Cowboy greats, LeBron James and George W. Bush.

The stadium lived up to much of it’s hype with its seven-story high state-of-the-art television screen and dancing towers for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders; the only thing missing was a win.

Between three interceptions thrown by Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, Giants QB Eli Manning passed for 330 yards, 284of them to wideouts Mario Manningham and Steve Smith. Manning then orchestrated a near-flawless final drive from his own end to set the stage for placekicker Lawrence Tynes to connect for a 37-yard game-winning kick, silencing the raucous crowd as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

In upsets Sunday, Mark Sanchez and the New York Jets beat the New England Patriots 16-9, the Chicago Bears upended the Super Bowl Champions Pittsburgh Steelers 17-14 on a last-second field goal and the Cincinnati Bengals upset the Green Bay Packers 31-24 at Lambeau Field in a game that included Ochocinco catching a TD pass and performing the Lambeau Leap.
