Mayweather survives a rough 2nd round and defeats Mosley

LAS VEGAS – Floyd Mayweather won a unanimous decision over Shane Mosley in their 12-round welterweightmayweather fight results championship Saturday night in front of 15,117 fans at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

An aggressive effort by Mosley in the 2nd round stunned Mayweather as much as it did the crowd who witnessed Mayweather almost buckle to the canvas from a few hard shots.

After surviving that barrage, Mayweather, who is considered one of the world’s best pound-for-pound fighters, regrouped and responded by taking control of the fight.

Mayweather did appear to hurt Mosley in the 7th and 8th rounds but, like Mayweather, Mosley refused to go to the canvas.

From that point on Mayweather basically went through the motions, outscoring his opponent well enough to cakewalk to another victory. Mosley, 38 years old, was fighting for the first time in almost a year and a half and looked his age towards the end of the fight.

Judge Robert Hoyle scored the bout 118-110 while judges Adalaide Byrd and Dave Moretti each scored it 119-109.

Mayweather complemented Mosley after the fight saying:

“He’s a hell of a fighter, what more can I say. He’s a future Hall of Famer.”

When asked about the drug testing that was responsible for killing the negotiations for a Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao fight, Mayweather said he remains ready to fight when Manny agrees to Olympic-style drug testing, the same testing Mosley agreed to for this fight.

The sellout crowd included Muhammad Ali, Will Smith, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mike Tyson, Jay-Z and Paris Hilton.

Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley press and fight schedule

The Mayweather vs. Mosley countdown has begun. With six days until fight night, the participants will be at the mosley-mayweathermercy of their publicists for events and grand entrances.

One of those entrances occurs on Tuesday April 27, as the fighters get the red carpet treatment at the MGM Grand. Grand entrances at the grand entrance of the MGM Grand. Do they think they have to hit us over the head with how big this event is? Oops, sorry, how grand this is?

You too can be part of the spectacle. The public is encouraged to attend the walk-ins. Shane Mosley arrives at the hotel at 2 pm PDT and Floyd Mayweather follows only thirty minutes later at 2:30 PM.

Realize however, that this is all filmed for the final installment of HBO’s Mayweather-Mosley 24/7. Perhaps that is appealing and if it is, hustle on down there to mix it up with the fighters and their respective entourages.

And speaking of 24/7, the third episode aired this past weekend. Where was the beef in that sandwich? The show seems to have run out of fresh material. Perhaps it is because Floyd Mayweather has been featured four times and the folks at HBO think we all have seen the previous series.

Shane Mosley’s back story has not been explored in any true depth. Viewers have not been treated to much film footage about his family, particularly his father Jack.

It was Floyd Mayweather who introduced the topic of Jack Mosley during episode 3. He was offended that his opponent didn’t give enough props to his dad who Floyd claims to admire.

Unlike other 24/7 look-ins, we haven’t seen more than token stories featuring the fighters’ children, the women in their lives, their hometowns and those that helped them early on to become who they are today. It resulted in rehashing old information during this latest episode.

Here are the scheduled fight week events to watch out for:

Tuesday April 27, grand entrances at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Beginning at 2 pm PDT the fighters will arrive at the hotel. The public is invited to attend.

Wednesday April 28, the final press conference featuring the fighters commences at 1 pm PDT.

Thursday April 29, the undercard press conferences begin at 11 am PDT. Later that day, the trainers, Naazim Richardson and Roger Mayweather will meet with press at a round table event that kicks off at 12:30 pm PDT.

Friday April 30, the official weigh-in is scheduled for 3:10 pm PDT. The finale of 24/7 Mayweather-Mosley will be screened for credentialed press at 6:30 pm PDT.

Mayweather Stays Perfect; Dominates Marquez

LAS VEGAS – Floyd Mayweather, Jr. improved his perfect record to 40-0-25 Kos when he took opponent Juan AP Photo: Laura RauchManuel Marquez to school Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.

After knocking down Marquez in the second round, Mayweather overpowered his much smaller opponent, dominating the fight and earning the unanimous decision.

Judge Burt Clements gave every round to Mayweather scoring the fight 120-107 while Dave Moretti scored it 119-108 and William Lerch’s tally was 118-109.

The stats were as lopsided as the judge’s cards with Mayweather landing 290 of his 493 blows (59%) while Marquez was able to connect on only 12 percent of the 583 punches he threw.

The night was by far the best payday Marquez has seen in his career. In addition to receiving $3.2 million for the fight, the little man from Mexico City was granted an additional $600,000 from Mayweather who was penalized for coming to the weigh-in two pounds over the 144 limit.
