NFL Player Chris Henry Dies After Fatal Accident

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It is a sad day for the NFL. bengals-henry

Cincinnati Bengals receiver, 26-year-old Chris Henry died at 6:36 a.m. this morning from injuries resulting from falling out of the back of a pickup truck during what police described as a domestic dispute with his fiancé.

Henry had a rough relationship with the league and was suspended five times over his career but Bengals owner Mike Brown wanted people to realize there was another side to the troubled player.

“We knew him in a different way than his public persona,” said Brown. “He had worked through the troubles in his life and had finally seemingly reached the point where everything was going to blossom. And he was going to have the future we all wanted for him. It’s painful to us. We feel it in our hearts, and we will miss him.”

Henry had been hospitalized since the accident occurred on Wednesday when police say the player jumped into the bed of the pickup truck owned by his fiancé Loleini Tonga as she was driving away from a residence. Sometime later, Henry “came out of the back of the vehicle” according to police.

Henry and Tonga have been raising three children.

Notre Dame QB Clausen and WR Tate Leaving for NFL Draft

SOUTH BEND – Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Jimmy Clausen and receiver Golden Tate announced they will skip their final jimmy-clausenyear at the university to enter the upcoming NFL draft.

The university made the announcement Monday on campus explaining the players made their decisions after speaking to fired head coach Charlie Weis this past weekend.

“Growing up as a kid, one of my lifelong dreams has been to play in the NFL and with that being said, with the support of my family and coaches I will be forgoing my senior year and entering the 2010 NFL draft,” Clausen said.

Throughout the season Clausen has been included in some of the Heisman talk and may be expected to be chosen in an earlier round of the draft.

The Irish certainly will have some rebuilding to do. They fired coach Charlie Weis last week and now are unexpectedly losing two of their key players to the NFL draft.

Alabama Defeats Florida 32-13 in SEC Championship Game

ATLANTA – In the much anticipated SEC Championship match-up between the #1 Florida Gators and #2 Alabama Crimson Tide, mark-ingram the Tide set the tone early scoring on the first two possessions and coasted to a 32-13 victory at the Georgia Dome in downtown Atlanta. The Tide dominated time of possession through the first three quarters, keeping the ball out of Tim Tebow’s hands.

Their most impressive possession started midway through the 3rd quarter when quarterback Greg McElroy and the Tide offense held the ball for a 17-play, 88-yard drive that burned 8:47 minutes off the clock and resulted in running back Mark Ingram’s 3rd touchdown of the game.

Tebow responded leading his offense down the field but just when it looked like the Gators may be orchestrating a comeback, he made a bad decision and threw an interception in the red zone suffocating any opportunity for a miraculous comeback.

In the race for this year’s Heisman Trophy, Ingram improved his chances of gaining votes with 27 carries for 109 yards and 3 TDs and 2 receptions for 76 yards against Florida’s No. 1 defense while Tebow finished 20-of-35 for 246 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT.

Florida’s loss snapped an incredible 22-game win streak that dated back to a 31-30 loss to Ole Miss back on September 28, 2008.

Tiger Woods’ Incriminating Voice Mail Message To Female Friend

ORLANDO – The level of the whole scenario surrounding the Tiger Woods recent car accident keeps escalating to Photo Credit: AP/TMZbizarre proportions.

While the Florida Highway Patrol just announced yesterday that it had concluded it’s investigation and insisted they had treated Tiger as any other citizen, this morning, US Magazine.com released an incriminating audio-tape believed to be Tiger Woods warning a female friend, 24 year-old Los Angeles cocktail waitress Jaimee Grubbs, that his wife Elin Nordegren looked into his phone, may have found the number and may be calling.

Here is the transcript of the voice-mail message:

“Hey, it’s Tiger. I need you to do me a huge favor. Can you please take your name off your phone? My wife went through my phone and may be calling you. So if you can, please take your name off that. Just have it as a number on the voicemail. You got to do this for me. Huge. Quickly. Bye.”

Here’s the audio of the message:

Woods had already dropped out of this week’s tournament play and has not been interviewed by the media since the accident.

Several Reasons For Atlanta Thrashers’ Hot Start

ATLANTA – Riding the wave of a four-game win streak and dramatic last-second victory Monday night against division rival Rich PeverleyFlorida Panthers, the Atlanta Thrashers will be taking a great deal of momentum into their game Thursday night against the New York Islanders at Philips Arena.

The Thrashers under the great leadership of Captain Kovalchuk appear to be adapting to Coach John Anderson’s offensive scheme as the team leads the NHL in goals per game with an impressive 3.46 mark. To put that in perspective, the dominating Detroit Red Wings led the NHL last season with a 3.52.

One of the reasons for the Thrashers hot start is the contribution of several players who were not on the roster at the start of last season.

Three of the top four names found on the team’s current stats sheet are Rich Peverley (10g-16a-26pts), Maxim Afinogenov (11g, 14a, 25pts) and Nik Antropov (2g, 21a, 23pts). Afinogenov scored the game winner with 5 seconds remaining in regulation time in that dramatic win against the Panthers.

Another factor is the impressive play of their youngsters. Nineteen-year-old Zach Bogosian leads the NHL in goals by a defensemen with 8 while eighteen-year-old rookie Evander Kane, another first-round pick, has contributed as well, adding (8g, 5a, 13pts), creating a rookie-of-the-year buzz around the city of Atlanta.

Goaltending is another area the team has improved and they’ve done it without Kari Lehtonen, their starting goaltender over the past few seasons. While Lehtonen continues to recover from an injury that required surgery, back-up goaltenders Johan ‘Moose’ Hedberg and Ondrej Pavelec have been sharing the crease duties.

After registering two shutouts (one each) over the past four games, the Thrashers find themselves in the upper half of the league in goals against average, a vast improvement over the past few years when they hovered near the basement in that category.

Pavelec, who earlier this season allowed a 180-ft shot to score, shut out the Red Wings 2-0 in Detroit while Moose put up a 1-0 goose egg at home against the pesky Philadelphia Flyers. Moose’s win snapped a 14-game winless streak against the Flyers.

Currently the Thrashers own one of the best road records in the NHL at 8-2-1 and find themselves in the 5th position in their conference with several games in hand on the leaders.

To put that in mathematical perspective, if the Thrashers win all four of the games they have in hand on the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins, the Thrashers would find themselves one point ahead of Sid The Kid in the standings; but let’s not get too ahead of ourselves.

TBS Replacing MLB Announcer Chip Caray

What is your opinion of this commentary explaining an obvious line drive out to left field during a crucial moment of Chip Carayan extra-inning MLB game? “Line drive. Base hit. Caught out there. The runner tags. Throw to the plate. On target. And in time! A double play!” (see YouTube video of call below).

Cable television network TBS must have the same negative opinion regarding it as a majority of the media and fans do because although Chip Caray, the owner of that embarrassing call above has several years left on his contract, the network and Caray have suddenly parted ways.

The blundered call above, the overuse of his line, “He fisted him!” and several other miscues delivered by Caray this past MLS season created a huge buzz during the playoffs and may have led to his departure.

In a company memo, David Levy, the president of Turner Sports, wrote: “Since the end of this year’s M.L.B. playoffs, we’ve had several discussions with Chip Caray regarding 2010 and beyond. Both sides have agreed that now is the right time for Turner Sports and Chip to move ahead on different paths.”

Caray was handed the mic as a third-generation announcer. He is the grandson of the legendary Chicago Cubs announcer Harry Caray and son of the late Skip Caray who called the games for the Atlanta Braves for several years.
