Tiger Woods Apology Felt More Like a Funeral – Video

In an atmosphere resembling a funeral more than a press conference, Tiger Woods read an apology from a written script today and by the time it was all said and done, he actually made George W. Bush look like an awesome public speaker.

Tiger Woods Apology

The vast majority of the crowd was made up of Woods’ friends and a few family members including his mother who, in common funeral fashion, was dressed in black. Throughout the 13 minutes of the read, the ‘audience’ basically sat motionless staring ahead.

The delivery felt over-rehearsed and with no interaction with the audience, it was morgue-like.

It was hard not to imagine that the few times Woods looked directly into the camera to deliver a particular line, that there wasn’t a note on the paper saying ‘Look into the lens for several seconds now’; it felt that rehearsed and premeditated.

The question will be debated, ‘Was Tiger’s apology sincere?’ You be the judge, here’s the video here:

While this debate picks up steam over the weekend, the fact he hand-picked a few media members and basically held a closed-door meeting with instructions to the attendees not to ask any questions should come into play.

That in itself will have many people doubting Tiger’s sincerity and intentions.

During the speech Woods said he was sorry for the “irresponsible and selfish behavior I engaged in.” and referring to his friends said “Now, every one of you has good reason to be critical of me.”

Woods wife Elin was not in attendance and he explained that no personal questions about his wife and he will ever be (AP Photo/David J. Phillip, File)answered.

He went on to say “I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated. What I did was unacceptable and I am the only person to blame,” and “I do plan to return to golf one day. I just don’t know when that day will be. I don’t rule out it will be this year. When I do return, I need to make my behavior more respectful of the game.”

He closed out the address talking about the benefits of being brought up through his mother’s faith, Buddhism then after finishing at the podium he walked over and hugged his mother.

The sports airwaves are sure to be sizzling with this debate into next week and already got off to a hot start.

Skip Bayless on ESPN First Take questioned the sincerity of those few remarks delivered straight into the lens while Rick Reilly said he thought it was totally sincere.

Lindsey Vonn, Enough of the Shin Pain Already!

WHISTLER, B.C. – Please make it stop! Lindsey Vonn’s pain in her shin is starting to become a pain in everyone else’s ass.Lindsey Vonn Falls

Statements and comments about the Olympic skier’s injury are becoming as obnoxious as when a 4-year-old with a tiny knick on their pinky spends an entire week sticking their finger in your face whining, “I got a boo-boo.”

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford threw a touchdown pass with a separated shoulder minutes after taking a crushing hit from a 300-pound defensive lineman to win a game against the Cleveland Browns then came back and played through the injury in another game four days later.

Ex-Minnesota Viking lineman Ed White finished an NFL game after breaking his arm, those are inspirational athletes that have played through serious injuries and pain.

Everyone was well aware of Vonn’s injury prior to the Olympics and knew she had to tough it out to compete and that skiing with a deep bruise to the shin would be extremely challenging.

An inspirational story and plot was all laid out. That is until the overabundance of complaints and comments about the injured shin surpassed the intolerable level deflating the inspirational aspects of the story and instead converting it to waterboarding-type torture levels of “Someone please make it stop!”

Like many other Olympic skiers have done in the past, Lindsey Vonn wiped out in the slalom run of the super-combined and was eliminated from yesterday’s event. The spill caused by a common skiing blunder ended Vonn’s bid for her second Olympic medal when she failed to maneuver her ski around a right-hand gate and fell.

With a lot of the media and public burned out on hearing about her injury Vonn again said her shin was “killing me”. She did, however, go on to admit the real culprit in this loss was her mistake.

“The shin wasn’t the reason why I didn’t finish the race,” said Vonn. “It was just because I hooked a tip, and that happens in ski racing all the time. I just wish it wasn’t at the Olympic Games.”

The day did however not end without more attention to the leg. After performing the fastest morning downhill run in the morning, Vonn again referred to her, you guessed it . . . her pain in her shin. “It hurts so bad,” Vonn said. “It’s one thing to do the downhill, but the super-combined is really tough on my shin. I tried as hard as I could.”

Husband Thomas Vonn commented on her injury. “It did play a role in the fact that she hasn’t been able to ski slalom in, like, three weeks,” said Thomas Vonn. “She had the mindset of going for gold and it’s the Olympics. That’s what you’re here for, and she’s capable of winning. So she wanted to go for it, and not ski safe and go for a silver or bronze.”

In another recent whining session, Vonn said, “It’s not good. It’s really hurting and I’m just struggling with it but there’s nothing really I can do. I just have to try to do therapy and try to tough it out today, and then tomorrow will be a good day off.”

“It was a long, long day yesterday, and I didn’t get as much rest as I was hoping for,” she said. “Especially with my shin, I need a little bit more time and therapy to try to get it to feel better.”

And we need therapy to get this redundant, obnoxious ringing in our ears to go away.

Please, make it stop!

The ‘Flying Tomato’ Wins Another Gold for U.S. Olympic Team

VANCOUVER, B.C. – During the Winter Olympics in Vancouver yesterday, U.S. snowboarding champion Shaun WhiteShaun White again showed the world he is a pioneer in his sport.

After one run in the halfpipe finals, White had already locked in the gold medal so he decided to entertain the crowd with a final run that included a move called the Double McTwist 1260.

For those new to the sports take out your calculator and divide 1260 by 360 = 3.5 then you will see what the major buzz is about.

To the blaring rock tune ‘Paradise City’ by Guns and Roses, the red-haired snowboarder known as the ‘Flying Tomato’ pulled off a move that included 3 ½ mid-air turns and a board grab; a maneuver he had been practicing in private while preparing for the games.

White nailed the move that could be called the ‘Tasmanian Devil’ for an Olympic record score of 48.4, wowing the crowd and impressing his competition and U.S. Snowboarding Coach Mike Jankowski.

“Shaun’s a living legend with what he’s done already and with what he’s going to continue to do and really push this sport to the next level,” Jankowski said. “It’s the All-American way. It’s being a pioneer and taking those steps into the unknown.”

“It’s impossible to beat Shaun unless he falls,” said runner-up and silver medal winner Peetu Piioroinen of Finland.

Before this final run, White had earned the gold after intentionally running a safer routine and posting a score of 46.8; a score none of his 11 opponents came close to beating.

The Flying Tomato adds this gold to his collection of hardware that includes a halfpipe gold in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.

White was psyched after the run and talked to reporters. “I don’t think I’ve been this nervous at a competition before,” said White. “It’s the Olympics and there’s so much on me to do well. I’m glad I had the goods to deliver. We try to break the boundaries and see what we can do. I think we’re just tapping into what is possible. I wish I could predict the future. We have to go create it. It’s a cool position to be in.

Snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis Blows Another Chance for Gold

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Another Winter Olympics and Lindsey Jacobellis is still struggling to win a gold medal.Lindsey Jacobellis Olympics PhotoYears ago at the Winter Games in Turin, Italy, Jacobellis lost a sure gold medal when she started hot-dogging it and pulled an unnecessary move grabbing her board in a “method grab” and wiping out before coming home with
the silver medal.

Yesterday, Jacobellis of Stratton, Vt. Was disqualified from advancing to the women’s snowboard cross final after veering off the course in the semifinal round and hitting a course gate.

Still having to complete the run down the long course, Jacobellis performed another unnecessary maneuver on the last jump, grabbing the board with both hands to entertain the crowd with a “truck-driver grab.”

Frustrated and obviously disappointed, the snowboarder passed up on the opportunity to meet with the print media in the mixed zone but did attend a later news conference to comment.

“It’s definitely not the end of the world for me,” said Jacobellis. “It’s unfortunate that the rest of the world only sees this race and the one four years ago. I guess I don’t have a great track record with the general public.”

“My board just finally caught up, threw me in the direction of the panels. I was like, ‘Well, nothing you can do about it now.’ Sometimes you can’t control the things you want to. Sometimes I’m dominant, sometimes I fall into funks when things like that happen.”

Maelle Ricker, Canada, ended up taking the gold in the event and offered a comment about when she and Jacobellis were running tight just prior to the mishap.

“I don’t think we clipped boards,” said Ricker. “We were definitely really close right out of the start and I don’t know what happened to her. I don’t know where she went down. I just tried to stay on my line and focus what I was doing.”

Ricker who is the first Canadian woman to win an Olympic Gold Medal on Canadian turf, had a challenging journey full of adversity. During the Turin Winter Games, Ricker wiped out hard during the finals and was airlifted to a hospital after suffering a concussion.

“It’s just crazy,” said the Gold Medalist. “I’m pinching myself.”

America Latching onto Sexy Lindsey Vonn and Apolo Ohno

WHISTLER, B.C. – America has a tendency to latch onto sexy athletes and this Winter Olympic Games offers both genders an opportunity to follow their favorite competitors. After her recent Sports Illustrated bikini photo shoot, female skier Lindsey Vonn joined those ranks along with American speedskater Apolo Ohno.

Lindsey Vonn

After a few great test runs in the downhill on Monday, America’s favorite Lindsey Vonn has said she plans on competing in all five Alpine events.Sports Illustrated Vonn

Skiing through intense pain, Vonn managed to turn in the fastest time in the upper section during the downhill training. Prepping for the course, she took painkillers and numbed the area before popping on her skis but still felt the effects of the jarring course.

“The course here is just so bumpy,” said Vonn. “It’s one thing when you inspect it and you’re like, ‘OK, this is going to be a little rattley.’ But it was jarring. It was a fight just to make it down the whole way.”

Vonn, who’s photo graced the controversial cover of Sports Illustrated recently, is the two-time defending World Cup overall champion.

The sexy blonde has since grown to become one of America’s sexiest female athletes and just as her popularity was skyrocketing through the roof, she bruised her right shin during a pre-Olympic practice in Austria on Feb. 2.

Vonn got a little help from Mother Nature when the women’s downhill training run was postponed and had to be rescheduled three times due to adverse weather conditions. Those delays were due to fog, snow and rain and while they offered extra time for Vonn to heal, they also battered the course.

After staying off the slopes for several days she finally tested her injury and as expected there’s a decent amount of pain. The biggest contributor to her pain appears to be the giant jump at the bottom of the run.

“That really hurt,” Vonn said. “It’s throbbing really bad. I just have to be able to grit my teeth and fight through it on Wednesday and hopefully I can still come out on top.”

For the record, Vonn is married to husband Thomas Vonn, who is the skier’s coach and advisor. Thomas commented on his wife’s ability to compete during these Winter Games. “I don’t see any reason why she’d pull out of any of them,” said Thomas. “She knows she’s going to be ready but she expected it to hurt less today than it did. That’s kind of where it’s at on that front.”

Apolo Ohno

Competing in his third Winter Olympics, Ohno tied speedskating great Bonnie Blair for most medals won by a U.S. Winter Olympian when he glided to Silver in the 1,500meter to ice medal No. 6 on Saturday.Apolo Ohno

The young American who has made the ‘soul patch’ sexy intends on adding more was in the bag.

Many are considering Ohno’s medal as a gift since the Korean team was storming to the finish looking certain to sweep the podium with Gold, Silver and Bronze until two of them wiped out on the final turn, allowing Ohn to glide to the Silver Medal.

Regardless of that one race, this dude stands out from his competitors many times staying at the back of the pack before deciding to make a late move and fly past everyone like they are standing still.

“Pretty intense,” Ohno said. “This is what this sport is all about.”

After winning that silver, Ohno now has two medals of each color and squeaked past Eric Heiden as the most decorated American male at the Winter Games.

Heiden is currently the team doctor for U.S. Speedskating and praised Ohno.

“The thing that really sets him apart is he’s been doing this for a number of years,” said Heiden. “We’ve learned to appreciate what dedication and hard work he’s had to put in. He’s a product of both those things.”

Ohno has three more opportunities in Vancouver to pass Blair in total medals when he competes in two individual races and the team relay.

“I’ve come prepared, more than I’ve ever prepared for anything in my life,” said Ohno. “I’m in a very, very good place. It feels like home soil to me. We just have so much support in the crowd.”

108,000 Cram Into Jerry’s House for NBA All-Star Game

A record-setting crowd of 108,713 jammed into Cowboys Stadium Sunday to watch the NBA Eastern ConferenceCowboys Stadium NBA All Star Game squeak out a 141-139 victory over the West.

Originally designed and listed to support a capacity of 35,000 fans for basketball and 80,000 for football, most of the fans had to watch the game on the giant screen to even have a clue what was happening on the court.

This game went down to the final seconds and ironically it was Dallas native Chris Bosh who scored the winning points, sinking free throws with just five seconds left.

The West got one more possession but Carmelo Anthony, who had a game-high 27 for the West, bounced a 3-pointer off the rim at the buzzer that would have won it.

Miami Heat player Dwyane Wade led the East with 28 points and 11 assists took home the MVP honors.

“I’ve had a little luck in Dallas. Of course, 2006 is very, very memorable, something I dreamed of doing for a long time, winning the NBA championship and I was lucky enough and blessed enough to win the MVP there,” Wade said. “To come and do it again is special.”

Cleveland Cavaliers LeBron James added 25 for the East and was in awe of the size of the crowd.

“To be in front of 108,000 fans, that was actually what it was, that was not a false number. You could look up in the stands, and there was not a seat open,” said James. “To be part of history is something that you always wish and dream for.”

The players spent their shoot-around trying to adjust to the gigantic stadium background which is so different from the standard size arenas they normally play in.

McMurray Dodges Pot Hole And Wins Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – After a total of 2 ½ hours of red flag mostly because of a pot hole in the track, Jamie McMurray inched out Dale Jamie McMurrayEarnhardt Jr. to win the Super Bowl of NASCAR on Sunday in a amazing finish.

The long delays pushed the race into a 6 hour 10 minute marathon and put a major blemish on the event but to those several frustrated fans who left Daytona International Speedway early, you missed an amazing show.

Brought to tears during the post-race interviews McMurray said, “I can’t really put it into words the way it feels. I’m trying to be genuine and as sincere as I can and not sound cliche: as a kid growing up, this is what you dream of, of being able to win the Daytona 500.”

McMurray’s victory came after a sprint to the finish line with Earnhardt, a 12-time Daytona winner riding on his bumper right to the end. When it was over, McMurray beat Junior by just .119 seconds to earn the first Daytona 500 win of his career.

“Fans deserve probably more of a show, so that’s what they got,” said Earnhardt. “I didn’t know where I was, you know, ’til I really kind of got done almost wrecking down the back straightaway. Then I looked up — there’s just one car in front of me, ‘Jamie’s gonna win this damn race!’ I was happy for him. He deserves it. They’ve been through a lot. It’s a great team.”

During the delay some of the drivers relaxed in their cars making light of the situation. “Let’s put a cone over that Daytona 500 Potholehole. You think we can dodge that the rest of the day?” said one of the drivers.

After the first delay to repair the pot hole, the race resumed but more and more asphalt wore away and after a short time of cars flying over it at 190 MPH it was bigger than it was the first time.

This incident is embarrassing for NASCAR and DIS but the excitement of the finish may help erase much of that. Sunday’s 500 also saw a record number of different leaders throughout the race.

After the race, DIS president Robin Braig apologized for the hole and the delays that caused those fans to head to the exits long before the finish.

“We’re the World Center of Racing. This is the Daytona 500. This is not supposed to happen, and I take full responsibility,” Braig said. “We can come back from this. We know how to fix it. This is hallowed ground. We understand that. We accept the responsibility.”

Will Wayne Gretzky Light the Olympic Torch?

Vancouver, B.C. – The Opening Ceremony for the 2010 Winter Olympics will take place tonight in Vancouver and like many past Olympics the question remains on who will light the torch.

Many famous former athletes have a history of lighting the flame including Muhammad Ali who lit it during the opening ceremonies for the summer Olympics in Atlanta in 1996.

Another notable lighting occurred during the opening ceremonies for the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002 when the entire 1980 USA ‘Miracle on Ice’ hockey team led by their captain Mike Eruzione handled the honors.

This year, the favorite? Canada’s most respected hockey player, Wayne Gretzky and the buzz has gathered a lot of momentum over the past few days.

A recent poll conducted by the Globe and Mail found that 25 percent of Canadians want to see Gretzky, their most famous sports hero light the flame when the ceremony takes place tonight. A poll held on CTVOlympics.com has Gretzky at 41 percent.

Although the NHL’s all-time leading scorer never won a gold medal for Canada as a player, he did manage Team Canada to the top of the podium in Salt Lake in 2002.

The ceremony can be seen on NBC at 7:30 p.m. ET.
