Bitch-Slap-of-the-Week – Steve Spurrier

Steve Spurrier and his #25 S.C. Gamecocks got taken to school and had their asses handed to them by the #4 Florida Gators at the Swamp in Gainesville, 56-6.

It was the worst loss in Spurrier football history. Never in his playing or coaching career has he been blown out and embarrassed to this magnitude. That career goes back to his days at Florida, Duke, the USFL Tampa Bay Bandits, the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins.

Spurrier got some of his own medicine regarding running up scores on feeble opponents. In 1995 Spurrier and his Gators demolished these same ‘Cocks 63-7.

How does it feel to be on the receiving end of score-run-ups, coach?

Spurrier could do nothing but stand and glare as his team was outmanned and bitch-slapped, giving up 519 total yards.

These ‘Cocks were out of this game before the National Anthem started.

Anniversary of two NFL Cheerleaders busted for sex in public

This week is the anniversary of the famous NFL cheerleader’s sex arrest that occurred three years ago in a Tampa bar.

TAMPA – In one of the most appreciated arrests in sports history, two NFL Carolina Panther cheerleaders were cuffed, mugged and accused of having lesbian sex in a public bathroom.

Does it get any better than that !

The incident happened back in November ’05 in a Tampa bar called Banana Joe’s and the girls were booked with a laundry list of charges including resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, assault, giving a false name and causing harm to another; a third-degree felony punishable by 1 to 5 years.

Renee Thomas of Pittsboro, NC and Angela Keathley of Belmont, NC were hanging out and slammin’ drinks at Joe’s when they took a stroll to the bathroom together like all women do.

According to a Tampa Police Report and witnesses, a gang of local Tampa ho’s got pissed off at the sexy couple for frolicking a little bit too long in the stall.

Hearing moaning coming from the closed stall, the gang started calling the pom-pom girls “whores” and “bitches” and later reported one of the girls were “going down on the other” right there in the stall.

After exiting their private quarters, one of the pom-pomers slugged one of the whining bitches, triggering a cat-fight melee.

Later, the Tampa cops showed up and Thomas resisted arrest; guess she didn’t want to be cuffed, not with metal ones that hurt anyway.

Both women ate jail food the next morning before posting out and being released. (see them in our Sports Mugshots and Cheerleader Gallery)

Keathley and Thomas were both booted off the cheer squad for violating a cheerleader code that “bans conduct embarrassing to the team or organization” and were immediately approached by Penthouse Magazine to do a spread and story.

This story generated so much interest nationwide that the Panthers NFL site crashed after receiving millions of hits.

On the Panthers Cheerleader site, both cheerleaders had listed the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation as their favorite charity. Maybe they were giving each other complimentary breast exams and this whole thing was a misunderstanding.

Both girls did plea out with Thomas being sentenced to 12 months probation, 50 hours of community service, and ordered to pay $400 restitution. She was also ordered to attend an anger management class and was barred from financially benefiting from the incident.

Keathley also copped a plea and was sentenced to probation.

All this time us guys thought you girls went to the john together to gossip!

Bitch-Slap-of-the-Week – Urban Meyer & His Gators

In a NCAA match-up that was expected to be a toe-to-toe slug-fest, the Florida Gators annihilated the outmatched Georgia Bulldogs, trouncing their SEC rivals 49-10.

Playing on neutral field, Florida fans began their raucous victory celebration with nearly a quarter left to play, while the Dawgs side of the field looked deserted after a majority of their fans–like Elvis–had left the building.

49-10; true bitch-slap! But what made it the most humiliating bitch-slap in Sports Climax history, were the timeouts called by Florida Coach, Urban Myer with the score totally out of hand and only seconds left on the game clock.

That move by Myer was probably in retaliation to last year’s Bulldog celebration after the Dawgs’ first score in that game that led to both teams clearing the benches and intensifying this rivalry.

Myers promised he was going to do something and kept quiet about it. Cheesy move calling the timeouts . . . yes.

Was the Dawgs’ taunting, rub-it-in-the-Gators-faces celebration in the end zone last year a cheesy move? Yes, but these things will only intensify and fuel this bitter rivalry.

Dawgs, you made our pick as easy as it’s ever been, congratulations, you are our hands-down, runaway, slam-dunk choice for the Sports Climax Bitch-Slap-of-the-Week.

MRSA Staph Infection invading NFL football

The following story is an excerpt from an article by Sean Gregory at www.time.com

Early this week, Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. revealed that staph (short for Staphylococcus) infection had sent him to the Cleveland Clinic for three days, and he accused the Browns of asking him to cover it up.

Pro football teams are notoriously reluctant to reveal any information on player injuries, but since six different Browns have caught the bug since 2005 – Winslow has had it twice – the team’s medical management looked suspect to some observers. “There’s obviously a problem [with staph] and we have to fix it,” Winslow told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “Just look at the history around here. It’s unfortunate, because it happens time and time again.”

The Browns, who denied that they had kept the news of his infection from his teammates, suspended Winslow one game for his rant, which included his claim that he felt like he had been treated like “a piece of meat.”

But the Winslow medical controversy wasn’t even the worst of it for the league. In the past week, it has become clear that two of its most marketable stars, marquee quarterbacks Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, had gotten infections.

The New England Patriots’ Brady has had at least two additional infection-related procedures since his initial season-ending knee surgery in September. It’s now possible that his knee will have to undergo another operation, which could delay his return until 2010. Staph seems to be the likely culprit, but neither Brady nor the Patriots will confirm that.

During training camp staph infected a bursa sac, which acts as a cushion between bones, in Manning’s left knee. The infection required surgery and forced him to miss most of the preseason. Though the Colts released a statement on Friday insisting Manning didn’t contract a more perilous staph, the anti-biotic resistant strain known as MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), the incidents should alarm the NFL.

“The NFL, and all the leagues, should be diligent, and not let their guards down,” says Dr. Robert Gotlin, director of Orthopedic and Sports Rehabilitation at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. “They’ve got to do better. It’s got to be one of the top five priorities.”

Staph, of course, is far from just an NFL problem. Two college teams, the ’05 Florida Gators and the ’03 USC Trojans, had multiple cases.

In 2003, a team of researchers also tracked the St. Louis Rams and found five players who caught eight MRSA infections.

Michael Vick to change plea on Dogfighting Charges

ATLANTA – Former Atlanta Falcon QB Michael Vick plans to change his plea next week on state dog-fighting charges in Virginia.

Vick initially pleaded not guilty to the charges but according to sources, will change his plea in a deal that would include a suspended sentence and one additional year of probation.

Vick is currently serving a 23-month sentence in the Leavenworth, Kansas federal prison.

According to Surry County administrator, Sally Neblett, a court date and hearing for the state charges is scheduled for Oct. 30.

Vick’s attorneys made a motion to present the plea and it will be done via video camera from the Kansas facility.

The strategy by Vick and his legal team is to plea out on these state charges then hope to get an early release from the current 23-month sentence in return.

Vick’s former team, the NFL Falcons, is currently 4-2 and making giant strides with their rookie sensation and No. 3 overall draft pick, quarterback Matt Ryan.

Prior to his arrest and conviction, Vick was the highest paid player in the NFL after signing a contract said to be worth the neighborhood of $100 million.

Bitch-Slap-of-the-Week – Dallas Cowboys

The St. Louis Rams 34-14 blowout of the heavily-favored Dallas Cowboys will be one of the most talked about games around the NFL water cooler this week.  The ‘Boys ‘D’ got run over all game long and the team got bitch-slapped all the way back to Dallas.

Back-up QB  Brad Johnson threw three passes to the wrong colored jerseys while the Rams offense controlled the ball with Steven Jackson rushing for 160 yards and 3 TDs.

After a strong start, The ‘Boys (4-3) have lost 3 out of 4 and find themselves two games behind the division-leading N.Y. Giants (5-1).

Newly-acquired WR Roy Williams did not catch a pass and DB Roy Williams is out the rest of the season with a broken arm; things are going downhill fast for the ‘Boys.

Dallas has played awful for the past month, so it’s difficult to pin this slaughter on the injury to Romo . . . the team just didn’t show up.

Wade Phillips summed up why these ‘Boys are the recipient of the Sports Climax’s Bitch-Slap-of-the-Week, “This is the worse game we’ve played since I’ve been here; all around we didn’t play well in many areas at all and there’s no real excuses for it.”

NFL Titans post-game needs Dress Code

TENNESSEE – The post-game press conference following the Titans 34-10 victory over the K.C. Chiefs included Titans running backs Lendale White and Chris Johnson and is one for the highlight reels.

White and Johnson were spectacular and combined for 317 yards rushing and 4TDs. The later stepped up to the post-game mics chewing gum and decked out like a couple of hard-core homies from the hood.

Donning dark sunglasses, hoodies, T-shirts and OD’ing on bling they looked more ready for a Saturday Night Live skit or Ice Cube rap video than a meeting with the media.

At first I thought they were joking but upon further review, they were not.

I couldn’t even tell you what they said, I was trying to figure out who decided to put these dudes in front of the camera to represent a professional NFL team and the league.

Hey, we should all choose our styles and be ourselves on our own time, I support that more than most anyone I know. But not when you’re at work and being paid millions of dollars a year to promote a business like the NFL on your “work” day.

After that press conference, I officially support dress codes and stricter rules for every team in every professional league in this country.

When I saw Johnny Damon forced to clean up his act and convert from his Jesus-in-uniform look to the Old-Spice look, I was questioning owner’s rights to make players get haircuts and succumb to dress codes.

When the NFL mentioned hair codes, the Steeler players were quick out of the gate to protest and I agreed, until now. This post-game press conference represented good reason why teams want to apply rules and dress codes.

The NBA recently set some dress codes for this exact reason and it’s time for the NFL to follow that lead.

Some Red Sox fans miss History

BEANTOWN – Some Red Sox fans miss history

The Tampa Bay Rays blew a 7-0 lead and allowed the Red Sox to score 8 runs in the last three innings for a record-setting, 8-7 dramatic comeback.

And how pissed off are the fans we saw heading to their cars during the seventh inning stretch and their team down 7-0?

Fans in every city criticize the fans in their rival cities for not being loyal enough and jumping on the bandwagon, but when it comes down to it, we all have a game we regret leaving early.

Mine is last week’s Atlanta Falcon game against the Bears when the game was “certainly over” with only 11 seconds left. The Bears had just put together the best drive of their year and went ahead 20-19.

With a rookie QB Matt Ryan in the driver’s seat and only 11 seconds left, you may as well put this one in the books . . . unless of course Lovie Smith calls for a squib kick, the rookie QB throws a perfect 30-yard sideline strike to a WR who makes a tip-toe reception with just 1 second left on the clock then a kicker splits the uprights with a 48 yarder to win the game 22-20 with no time on the clock.

Two sayings fit this scenario, “It isn’t over ’til the Fat Lady sings” and “Misery loves company?” Well my company was all those dumb-ass Red Sox fans who will regret throwing in the towel too early and missing the greatest comeback in MLB history.

Who will win this MLB series? Vote on our homepage.

Bob Uecker Seats in Tampa

The Tampa Bay Rays announced they will remove the tarp covering their “Bob Uecker” seats in the highest point of the upper deck of Tropicana Field. This opens the area for an additional 5,762 “jump-on-the-bandwagon” Rays fans for Game 6 of the AL Championship or Game.

According to a team’s spokesman, some of the seats are obstructed-view and some don’t have seatbacks.

Roy Williams signs & Romo might Play

Roy Williams signs 5-year extention with Dallas

The Detroit Lions did exactly what they said they were not trying to do, they traded their star WR Roy  Williams to the Dallas Cowboys for a 1st, 3rd and 6th round pick in next year’s draft. Detroit sends their 7th round pick to Dallas.

Roy Williams returns to the state where he played college football and joins former rival, DB Roy Williams on the Cowboys. Jerry Jones secured keeping Williams by placing a $45 million five-year contract ($20 million guaranteed) in front of the former Lion.

Williams was a wasted talent being stuck on the Lions since he was drafted. The way the Lions draft, don’t be surprised if Dallas’ 7th round pick produces more talent than the three picks they traded to the Lions. Good news is, Matt Millen won’t be making the choices and neither will Lions Coach Rod Marinelli by the looks of it.

Dallas QB Romo out for Several Weeks; or is he?

On Monday, NFL.com reported that Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo fractured the pinkie finger on his throwing hand and could be out for up to four weeks. On Wednesday, Romo approached the coaching staff and has asked to play this Sunday.

Romo broke his right pinkie on the first play of overtime in Sunday’s 30-24 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Coach Wade Phillips said Romo, who had difficulty gripping the ball and throwing after the injury, would not have surgery.

He couldn’t grip the ball,” said Phillips. “He probably should have gone out of the game. He had sprained his finger before, and thought that’s what it was when he couldn’t grip the ball.”

If Romo sits, the Cowboys (4-2) will start 40-year-old Brad Johnson. Johnson, who won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay, hasn’t started a game since the 2006 season in Minnesota.

Tampa Bay’s Gruden names Garcia Starter

Jon Gruden named Jeff Garcia as the starting QB for this Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

“He’s going to start this week,” Gruden said. “If he continues to play like Jeff Garcia, he’s a Pro Bowl-caliber guy. OK? I’ll put it that way. Brian Griese has an injury, we need him back. We’re one of the few teams in football who has two different quarterbacks at this stage of the game, and we’re proud of those guys. We like all our quarterbacks.”

Ryan and Falcons get Bye Week after Dramatic Victory

The young Atlanta Falcons will have an extra week to prepare for their next game. After defeating the Chicago Bears 22-20 in the most dramatic fashion on Sunday, Matt Ryan and his 4-2 team have a bye week.

Ryan who showed tremendous composure on the second to last play of the game Sunday was taking his 30 yard perfect toss in stride.

“Our thoughts going onto the field with six seconds left were to be on time with the throw,” Ryan said. “The biggest thing was to stay in rhythm. We thought that we could get the completion and get it out of bounds. The play developed just like we had in our minds when we took the field. Michael Jenkins made a great catch. Leaving the field you have the confidence in Jason to make the kick. He’s been such a great kicker in his career that you knew he’s going to come in and make that kick, and he did that.”

“Pacman” Suspended for a Bunch

“Pacman” Jones was suspended by the NFL for at least four games for his altercation at a Dallas hotel restroom.

If he were kicking the bathroom attendant’s ass, I could understand; those dudes can get on your nerves; but he was beating on his bodyguard. Don’t expect the drama surrounding Jones to end anytime soon.

NY Rangers top Prospect dies in Russia

RUSSIA – Alexei Cherepanov, New York Rangers No. 17 overall pick in the 2007 NHL Draft, collapsed and died of an apparent heart attack during a game with his KHL Avangard Omsk team. Here’s a video of the incident that shows former NHL star Jaromir Jagr standing over the fallen player as medical staff respond to the bench:

The 19-year-old third-year player tallied eight goals and five assists for 13 points in 15 games thus far this season.

Rangers GM Glen Sather made a statement to the media regarding the loss. “On behalf of the New York Rangers organization, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to [Alexei’s] family. Alexei was an intelligent, energetic young man, with tremendous talent and an extremely bright future.”

The Rangers had planned on including Cherepanov in their plans for the 2009-10 season as the player remained in Russia developing for the NHL.

Cherepanov had 29 points in 47 games with Omsk when it played in the Russian Super League and had more points in his first year in that league than Ilya Kovalchuk, Alexander Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin did. In addition to those impressive numbers, the youngster tallied 18 goals during his rookie campaign in 2006-07 to break Pavel Bure’s league rookie scoring record.

Jay Grossman who also represents Ilya Kovalchuk said, “He was a great kid. He had a great smile and was an outstanding player with a great future on and off the ice. It’s both shocking and devastating news for all of us.”

Yes it is and it appears an investigation is opening up to the lack of treatment the player received on the bench after his collapse as seen in the video above.
