TENNESSEE – The post-game press conference following the Titans 34-10 victory over the K.C. Chiefs included Titans
running backs Lendale White and Chris Johnson and is one for the highlight reels.
White and Johnson were spectacular and combined for 317 yards rushing and 4TDs. The later stepped up to the post-game mics chewing gum and decked out like a couple of hard-core homies from the hood.
Donning dark sunglasses, hoodies, T-shirts and OD’ing on bling they looked more ready for a Saturday Night Live skit or Ice Cube rap video than a meeting with the media.
At first I thought they were joking but upon further review, they were not.
I couldn’t even tell you what they said, I was trying to figure out who decided to put these dudes in front of the camera to represent a professional NFL team and the league.
Hey, we should all choose our styles and be ourselves on our own time, I support that more than most anyone I know. But not when you’re at work and being paid millions of dollars a year to promote a business like the NFL on your “work” day.
After that press conference, I officially support dress codes and stricter rules for every team in every professional league in this country.
When I saw Johnny Damon forced to clean up his act and convert from his Jesus-in-uniform look to the Old-Spice look, I was questioning owner’s rights to make players get haircuts and succumb to dress codes.
When the NFL mentioned hair codes, the Steeler players were quick out of the gate to protest and I agreed, until now. This post-game press conference represented good reason why teams want to apply rules and dress codes.
The NBA recently set some dress codes for this exact reason and it’s time for the NFL to follow that lead.
