ATLANTA, GA. – Last night in Atlanta, Matt Cooke took his act to Philips Arena and in a meaningless game decided to chase Thrashers rookie Evander Kane around challenging the youngster. Kane, who is named after Evander Holyfield, accepted the invitation and leveled Cooke with one punch, knocking him out cold.
This is one of the classic NHL brawls of all time. Both teams and the league anticipated this to occur after the Avs Claude Lemeiux had boarded Red Wings player Kris Draper head first into the boards in an earlier game, causing serious injury to the player.
This may be one of Don Cherry’s favorite fights–he showed it in it’s entirety on a replay the following week on Hockey Night in Canada. Whenever McSorley and Probert were on opposing benches, you could mark your calendar for another classic brawl.
